Smartphone for European Bike Tour?

Has anyone used Twitter and blogged from a mobile phone while on a bicycle tour? I'm contemplating a bicycle tour across Europe next summer, and I would like to post to Twitter and blog from a phone during my rides. I'm curious how much data I would need on my mobile plan to do it. (Probably on an iPhone with a small netbook for editing photos.)
