I'm sure you've seen it or heard about it. It's a video that either has your rolling, or has you a tad pissed off. What side are you on? Called for or not?
I thought the video was hilarious and I could so relate to it! Recently someone told me that they had a great idea for a travel blog. They wanted me to build it for them so that they could go on 'free trips' ...
I mentioned that running a blog took a lot of time and work. They had the nerve to say that they were 'too busy' to actually do anything but maybe post a story every once in awhile, so they thought that it would be great if I did all of that work and they could do the free trips! Amazing....
This videos rang so true to me that I'll be including it in my TBEX Europe talk, "So You Wannabe a Travel Blogger - Keeping It Real". I'm fed up of all the hype suggesting you can just chuck in your day job, start blogging and travel around the world with the income generated from your blog and/or on "free" trips.
Travel writing/blogging involves a lot more than swanning about on free press trips especially if blogging is your main source of income. Free tips aren't exactly free if you value time and think of the opportunity cost i.e. what else you could do in the time you are on trip and doing write ups. You also have to do less glamourous tasks such as SE0 and selling ads.
I thought it was spot on. There are so many people out there who think travel writing is easy. It isn't. And many of them who try haven't even bothered to learn to write good well.
