I'm getting ready to make some heavy duty travel purchases, since I just bought myself some big-girl fancy luggage and I want to know what's the one thing you never travel without?
I feel like everyone is going to say their iPhone or smartphone or heaven forbid, cell phone. So...that's excluded, as is your passport (DUH), money, credit cards, and clean underwear.
My Kindle. Having reading material is crucial for me on a trip, especially an extended one. The Kindle allows me to carry a thousand books in the space that a paperback would take up. I've always got it loaded up with lots of good reading material -- both free (the classics, new authors, and random titles), best sellers, and titles that I've missed. You can also download newspapers, magazines, and blogs -- although I've stuck with books.

I can't travel without a small fan, I don't sleep without one. The noise also helps drown out any noise that other people make in the corridors or outside. The other thing is my Kindle. I too can't travel without reading material.
My camera. I really like photography and capturing my first perceptions about a new place. Once I am home, the pictures can help me to re-live the moments from the past and I can see how my perceptions have changed from before.
