Comment by Meliha on March 3, 2012 at 10:47pm Jillian, we were in PdC/Tulum area 3 years ago in Dec/Jan. (That was right around the time when the news reported they found those heads in the boxes somewhere in Mexico.)
It was fine but there was a noticeable police presence in PdC. One afternoon/evening, we walked around in downtown PdC to go get some dinner and saw about 20 soldiers in the back of a truck, all with face masks (to hide their identities and yes, we were sure they were police).
Regardless, we tooled around for 7-10ish (don't remember exact timeframe) days and did not run into real issues (though we were concerned).
Do you follow Andrew from NatGeo (on Twitter)? He was just in Mexico last week, and I specifically asked him (on Twitter) if it was safe now and whether he had seen any issues, and he said everything in Mexico is/was fine.
Comment by Jillian Livingston on March 2, 2012 at 3:18pm I have a trip coming up where I am taking my three sons and husband on a Cenote/Snorkeling trip in Mexico. We are staying in a condo on the beach in Akumal, South of Playa Del Carmen. I have been warned that I should cancel my plans since our goal is to rent a car and drive all over.
Can anybody advise as to the dangers for tourists on that side of Mexico?
