Ben, Are we doing the Lowry Zoo Boo October 8th? Who is a our contact? Just arrive individually and what do we say for admittance? Ticket counter? Or where? Can we visit the zoo during the day at all before the evening activities? if you have the email of the contact that would work, I guess? LMK

Wow that was my first experience with examiner how annoying! If I was not there to support a fellow travel blogger I would have left before reading, three pop ups before getting to the post. However Erika it was a great post.

Nice article, Erika.  I also left a comment on Examiner for you as well.

Great point Rori about letting your subjects know you wrote about them. I often reach out to the various hotels and restaurants I write about and share the review, who will often retweet or post the article on Facebook and generate way more hits than I would have achieved on my own.

Tiffany, if it is like when I started, they'd pay you more than the penny per click. Over the year I did it that dropped to "you were lucky if you got a penny" and then they weighed comments and multiple pages more. Still, they did very little to actually drop that penny your way for the work and time. Personally don't know what they do now.

I learned a ton about marketing and such - linked a lot from outside back in, used great SEO - but you're still at their mercy. If you can get people you've written about to link back that does help

Indeed a smart thing for anyone - and something I still forget to go back and do once something of mine posts - is to let the place you wrote about know and encourage them to link to your articles - that can bring in nice hits no matter where its posted.

Wnderful article, Erika! I tried to leave a comment, too, but it didn't work. I didn't know that's how you get money from Examiner. Any other secrets out there to help each other make money?

I get it - Examiner did start me off and did let me start making those connections. I just got so fed up with their horrible systems and lack of real pay, plus the reputation they were working hard to take into the basement. I was lucky and enough doors opened that I went on my own and haven't looked back - but totally get it. AND I have heard that people are still impressed with their name - which is funny because I've heard equal numbers who hate 'em and don't trust 'em. Get this: I was actually interviewed & quoted in Writers Digest about writing for them and liking them. Three months later I'd had enough and totally agreed with the "cons" person from the article. You never know... I DO totally wish you (and all good Examiners) great good luck. I have a number of friends still writing for them. Too bad you won't get that penny from comments when people can't leave one - like I tried for you!
