Seems like a great idea, not only does it save having an expensive laptop with you but with out the distractions you can really focus on your writing.
With 50$ more you can get an ASUS eeePC and you can connect to internet, do basic photo retouch, etc. On the other side if you have already a good phone or iPhone internet is sorted, and you just need to write.. I guess it all depends on the package of gadgets you're carrying with you.. you can read more on this post of mine.. Happy Flashpacking!
We bought an Asus eee and really like it. Got the linux version to avoid constant virus update struggles.

We currently carry a 12" Apple Powerbook and the new netbook; between them both, it keeps Linda and I tapping away.
How is the durability of the Asus? I keep killing laptops. I'm on my 3rd now and am looking for something small and compact for my adventure in china.
I've bought ThinkPads for my last 2 laptops and they are super durable. I dropped my old T-43 laptop from waist level onto a concrete sidewalk while running to catch a bus and it was fine. Later it fell off a table onto a hardwood floor with no problems.

The X-series ThinkPads are very small, but not quite as small as a netbook. If you get a ThinkPad, get one of the higher-end models with titanium shell. A 5-year, at-home, next-day repair plan was about $120 USD if I recall correctly.
It is fine if you just do text, email and web surfing. If you want to use Photoshop or do video editing, it wont cut it.
an iPhone and hostel with WiFi would suffice.
