Comment by Glen Abbott on March 23, 2012 at 12:34pm Emme, I kind of agree with you. I've done guest posts for no pay, which I don't mind if the hosting blogger is a friend (someone from this group, for example) or if it's a major site that I want the exposure from. But when someone offers me $10 or $25 to write something, I do feel that's a little insulting (it's kind of twisted logic on my part, but I feel better about doing it for no pay than for a token payment). For print media, I expect the publication to pay a fair rate -- anywhere from .25 per word (bare minimum) to $1 a word, depending on the publication.
Emme, I don't make much money for a lot of things I write. $30 for my print travel columns in two magazines, $20 for one online venue. The most is $75 for Travelhoppers, but the most common is nothing at all. I didn't mind at first when I was building my resume but now that I have built up my credentials, I really prefer to be paid, at least something. And I consider pay to be comped travel. If I can barter a couple of articles for a free stay, I will definitely do it. But I know everyone is not in a position to do that.
Comment by Jon Bigg on March 23, 2012 at 12:43am Hi Emme, I think it depends on the writer's motivation, really. Writers may well be prepared to offer copy at low price, or for free even, to increase their exposure. And of course there are bloggers who are not usually paid for what they write. http://kilimanjaroshadow.blogspot.com/
Comment by Emme Rogers on March 22, 2012 at 9:33am I don't know if anybody else is on the same page as me, but publications (online or otherwise) that offer less than $50 / article is simply insulting. We pay our most junior writer more than that. Quality writing takes time & should be valued.
