Do you find it difficult to find hotel/guesthouse rooms that sleep more than the sterotypical family of 4? I have 3 kids and for years I have had trouble finding accommodation to suit us. We have needed a Room for 5 on many occasions, mostly for overnight stays from Ferry crossings, Airport accommodation to family gatherings. Even this year we drove through France and had to stay in seperate rooms overnight in Orleans as I couldn’t find a room for 5. Because of this I decided to start a website, Room for 5, to try and find this elusive accommodation. I only started it in May and I already have almost 600 hotels/guesthouses and I'm sure there are many more out there. Are you a family of 5 or more? I would love to hear your experiences and hopefully your feedback on the site.

We had no trouble in Switzerland because they cater very well for groups of friends staying together on walking or skiing trips. Everywhere we stayed had family rooms with 5 beds (or 4 beds and an extra mattress on the floor). In South East Asia, the same is true.

In the UK, the best way to get a family room is to use Youth Hostels. Most of them now have private rooms for families (as opposed to dorms) which are very reasonably priced and nice.
I think unfortunately Youth Hostels have a bit of a stigma, you tend to think they are full of students and backpackers and like you say, people think they will be sleeping in dorms. Since creating the site I have found this not to be true and there are some great Youth Hostels out there that are suitable for families. Things are coming along though I now have over 730 hotels/guesthouses listed so its turning into a great resource for families of 5 or more.
I'm really happy I came across this post! I have four kids and we're planning a trip to the UK this summer. I'd really prefer not to have to get two rooms wherever we go - off to check out your site! Thanks!
That's fantastic Jennifer, where are you from? If you liek you can sign up to the forum to have a whinge about how everything is catered for the 'normal' family fo 4!:) www.roomfor5.co.uk/forum
Great info! We are a family of 5 and area always stuck with the "problem" of an extra person, or a higher fee. Great resource. Thank you!
Thanks Carol, I hope you find it useful:) Please think about joining the forum where we can moan about the injustice of it all;)

I am going to bookmark your site! We have 3 children, and always have trouble finding places to stay when we travel. Our youngest is getting too big to sneak into a room for 4. We often book, and enjoy staying in vacation rentals, condos etc. But for one night near an airport or ferry, or to get the perfect spot right on a beach, sometimes you need a hotel.

Hi Shawna that's great! Yes it's just the one night or weekend that's the problem;)

I hope you find it useful and please let me know iif you stay in any that are not listed:)
