I'd love to hear what family travel everyone has planned. I just bought spring break plane tix for Phoenix and am toying with the idea of a NYC trip this spring too. We'll have a two-week midwest driving tour this summer, hopefully stops in Chicago and Kansas City (in addition to southern Wisconsin) and then three weeks in Vermont at the beginning of August.

I've found that blogging has made me a better traveler - less lazy, more inclined to think outside the box. What do you all think?

Writing about my travel definitely helps me gain a better appreciation about it all. It sounds like you have some fun trips in the works!

We're heading to Park City Mountain Resort tomorrow and I will be doing a write-up about Devil's Thumb Ranch, a gorgeous destination in Colorado, in a couple of months. I will also be covering the Crested Butte Music Festival this summer (if you've never been, definitely go). My parents are in Calgary so we always spend a couple of weeks with them and a new trip this summer may include visiting an aunt who just bought a beach house in Nova Scotia. Definitely some trips with great potential!
Park City - I'm jealous! Have a good time.
I'd love to travel more with my family but I find that as they get to be teenagers, they are less inclined to do things as a family but more interested if their friends can come alsong. That's how I got talked into taking my 14 yr old daughter and 3 of her friends to Berlin this April.

Apart from this, everything is in a constant state of negotiation, but sometimes it seems easier to leave them behind rather than try to please everyone. Enjoy the family trips while you can.

I do agree that being a blogger hasmade me really get the most out of my travel experiences.
We have just a few short trips planned before fall.

We'll head to Southern California in March for Persian New Year (No Ruz) and to San Francisco in April for Passover. Both are places we go a lot, and I'm looking forward to finding some new things to do as well as revisiting some old favorites. In July I fly solo with my new baby for the first time to head to BlogHer and the TBEX Meetup!

In the fall, I'm not sure... lately I have New York and Paris on the mind, but it would be nice to go someplace new too.

I've always done a lot of research before we hit the road & being a mom has stolen some of my usual energy for that effort, but I do try to make the itineraries I host on my site before we leave town. That way I get to road test them before they're live to everyone else. That effort helps me do a better job of figuring out what activities we should group together on a single day.
Let me know when you're in town and we can have a park date or something fun. Good luck on your ambitious Blog Her travel plans!
I've got a whacky travel year this year because I'm waiting for two new babies in my family which will drive timing of travel plans. In the meantime, we're going to Whistler this coming w/e (Feb 14th - yay!) for a few days and we plan to go back again at least a couple of times - again for weekend trips - before April 1st.
We'll be in the UK for a family wedding in late March and are going to check out Cornwall as part of that trip - I'm excited, because it's one of the few "celtic countries" that I've never visited. Although Seattle - Heathrow to 5-hr train journey to Truro is going to be a little challenging.
One of my sisters is pregnant and moving to Sydney in early March and another one will be adopting from Mexico next month too. So, we'll definitely be going to Mexico (we're the witnesses for the legal adoption process), but we don't know when that will be - sometime between March and September. Again, exciting because it will take us to a part of Mexico we haven't visited before. As for Australia, I'm watching airfares. If I can swing a trip to Sydney to help her in the time after the baby is born I will.
We're toying with what to do for a summer vacation this year since it's the first year in a few where we haven't got family commitments in Europe. We might just be able to try our first ever American Road Trip. Any suggestions on routing are more than welcome. Also plan to hit BlogHer and make it a family w/e away visiting more family in Chicago.
And then I'd really like to squeeze in a trip to somewhere sunny over Thanksgiving since this is the 2nd winter in a row where we haven't left Seattle (the cost of having to go to EU in the summer). I don't know if I can face next winter!!
That's about it. I think. If I get photos and blog about all that, I'll be very proud of myself :)
I had plans for a Southwest road trip for Spring Break, but now I'm wondering if I'll do a road trip in California, just to save a bit of money. I have a pretty stable job, but now they are talking salary reduction, that will affect my vacation decisions this year for sure.
Then for summer, I have hopes to go to Oregon, and/or Washington to check out the orcas. And we will finish off our summer with Hawaii-aiming for 2 weeks there (here's to hoping!).
I'm heading to Vegas with the family for Spring break. Have taken my first born and cousins, but never three kids. I'll be on my oen during the day so I will be doing some serious planning for that one.

At the start of summer we will be heading up to Santa Cruz to visit family. I would love to squeeze in some outdoor adventures, trips to some missions (San Juan Bautista?) and maybe a stop in Monterey. Once again during the day it will be just me and three kids so I will have to be creative.
Bash me if you will, but I just returned from Disney World with my daughter. She asks to go every year for vacation, and we don't go. When the opportunity came to take her, I jumped on it and have no regrets. It was the first time I've ever heard her say, "Mom, I'm so happy that my eyes are watering." That right there made it so worth it. I try not to forget, that even though I'm a travel blogger and writer, my kids are still kids and shouldn't miss out on these kinds of experiences, even though I normally try to bring them someplace more cultural.

My son skipped a grade this year and is entering high school in the fall, which I am sooo not ready for. Since he is into music (like his mama) the HS band asked him to participate with them as they march in the 4th of July Parade in DC. I'm tagging along, so there's one trip this summer.

I don't know at this point when or where we'll take our annual family vacation. It all depends on Wildfire season and when and where my husband will be home. I'm sure there will be many jaunts in RedBugg during the summer with just myself and the kids.

This will be the last school year that my son lives at home full time, so we'll try to make the most of our time together. When he enters 10th grade, he'll be living 3 hours away at a state-run Math, Science, and Arts school. He's looking forward to that, due to the fact that they have units of study which requires them to learn the language and culture of various countries, and then visit and explore their own interests while there (engineering, science, music, etc). Of course, he's still an average kid inside also and has been researching a new Harry Potter park opening at Universal. He's already put in his request for the opening of that one!
We have planned a short trip to Suffolk, about four hours drive from our house in London, mainly to visit friends, in May. It is a beautiful area of the UK, with lovely beaches. In the summer holidays we are currently planning a trip to Switzerland. None of us have ever been, so we are going to spend a couple of weeks in the South East and do some walking in the mountains and a visit to Heidi's house. It will be our most adventurous trip to date with our children who are aged almost 7, 4 and 2. When our youngest is 4, we are planning a 9 month rtw trip to Hawaii, NZ, Australia, SEA and Japan - can't wait. I've just started my first blog to cover this trip, so I'm new to this business!
College-related travel in the offing for us. Most likely to Vermont, Arizona and Boston. Would love to discuss what it's been like doing this for the past year!
Airfares have dropped so much that combined with all the hotels there right now - it is so tempting to pick up and go. I'm thinking about a very last minute trip to San Diego next week and then we have 10 days planned in the Dordogne region of France. Mara, where do you stay in Vermont?
