Travel Blog Exchange

I wanted to start this thread because I was thinking about writing a post on this topic, and I wanted insights from other globetrotters and expats.

This idea stemmed from my own experience, of course, and since I'm still trying to deal with my depression/quarter-century crisis, by hearing/reading about your experiences in dealing with sad feelings while on the road or as an expat, you would not just be helping anybody that reads this, but you would be quite possibly helping me :D And if I do end up composing a post on it, you will be the first to read it, I assure you.

So, some questions to get you going:

Have you suffered from depression or have had sad feelings that you believe can be attributed to a mobile lifestyle or extended stays abroad? Or maybe somebody you know personally has?

What are your tips or advice on dealing with it?

How could it be prevented in the future?

Just in case you don't feel like sharing these things publicly, do not hesitate to contact me by email at carla.avenia.koency AT gmail.com

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Carla, I feel for you.. and yes I think everyone who does long term travel experiences some depression from time to time.  It's not always easy being a vagabond and living out of a backpack. Sometimes we crave the comforts of home, family, friends and a clean and safe environment.  When I get down, first I get online or skype and talk to family and friends back home. Get caught up on what's happening in their lives, their trials and tribulations... and sometimes that helps.  If not I will treat myself to a nice hotel room for one or two nights... break the bank... if I'm going to be depressed I usually don't want to be out and about with a bunch of strangers (that just adds to the blues) so I get a room that I will be comfortable in with satellite TV and room service (or I'll go out and pick up a pastry or something that reminds me of home).  If that still doesn't work, I will go out and do something to be around kids (they usually cheer you up) or help someone out who is less fortunate.. a little volunteer work helps... makes you realize you really don't have it so bad.  That's been my prescription and so far it has worked... hope it helps you. Good Luck.
Thanks a lot... I didn't think about the children and volunteering. I'll keep this one in mind, definitely!

I think my way of staying positive is to stay busy. I am backpacking around the globe, and havnt had much time to think. It seems like every town I got to, I meet new people doing the same exact thing as me, and that have the same mentality as me. these people keep me on my toes. I thought I would get depressed when I left on my own, but I meet new friends every day. If I have ever started to get down, it's because i am getting bored, so then i move on the the next place and start all over. gotten me through quite a few countries so far.   Feel free to write to me anytime Carla.   It's nice to talk to new people       www.justincarmack.blogspot.com     Nomadventures

Thanks Justin! I actually think that my feelings come from the fact that I've been moving around a lot, and now I've set base camp in Marseille. It doesn't mean I will be here forever, but at least for a long time. Maybe I'm not used to it and that is causing a bit of depression? I'll go and check out your blog now :D
being depressed sucks. The only times i get sad is when I meet an awesome person, but then we part ways a few days later. it happens alot for me, travelling as far as i am.  Keep in touch, hope you liked the blog
