Hey everyone, although Off Track Planet is fairly new to the blogging world - I've become fairly obsessed with Wordpress, SEO, site metrics and travel writing since we got started. I develop, design and market the site myself and we are off to a very successful start! I've done a hefty load of research and continue to learn many new techniques daily, so If you have any questions I'll be more than happy to help out. If you are looking for advice on writing, you can direct them to our head writer/editor, Anna.
I guess my question is about writing. Actually focus and direction. My blog http://taxlawdiva.blogspot.com was started just as a way for my friends to keep up with me during my trip to Amsterdam in 2008. Now, I plan on continuing my travels and would love for my blog to reach a wider audience. I notice that many people who blog are doing the "fish out of water" approach as they are living somewhere new, foreign and/or exotic. My question is...if I'm not CONSTANTLY traveling (I will probably be going somewhere every 2-3 months though) how do I keep my blog new and fresh? What reason do people have to visit my blog regularly? Any input is appreciated! Thanks! ;-)
I can absolutely relate to your questions! I have to tell you that I ran across this website by an Aussie named Darren Rowse. The website is at http://www.problogger.net/. The site is dedicated to teaching others how to blog....for instance two of his articlesare: 7 Questions to Ask On Your Blog to Get More Reader Engagement and How to Write Great Content for Your Blog In the New Year. You should check it out!
I have three blogs, so it's difficult to keep everything fresh and new especially when you are fighting the ever present writer's block and even moreso for the travel blogger, if you are NOT a constant traveler. In that case, I try to focus on things that I've learned in my travels that have helped me that I can pass along to others travelers. All of us have some knowledge that we can impart, it's just a matter of sitting down and segmenting every part of your past trips and breaking them down into manageable pieces. For my Rome trip, I wrote an article about the Scavi tour: http://aviewtoathrill.net/2009/08/25/exploring-the-excavations-of-s.... I could have just as easily wrote a piece on the Trevi fountain....etc. Or you can simply offer advice that can be useful to a newbie traveler.
If you want to really focus on traveling, you may want to have a blog dedicated specifically for that. Your current title sounds like a blog for lawyers. This why I ended up with three blogs....one for travel, another for gardening and yet another for my personal creative writings. Having only ONE was like trying to have one blog serve three masters, so I decided to split them up and the cost was negligible. I hope that this helped.
hi!
i'm not sure whether you can answer my question but since you have offered advise on wordpress, i'm taking a chance : )
i'm having trouble with excerpts on my homepage. the 'more' tag leads to an error page. so now i have 10 full posts on my home page and ma worried google may have issues with duplicate content as the same posts also appear on the category pages.
i had installed a plug-in to change the names of the posts and wonder if that's one of the reasons i'm having this problem. i have tried reading everything i could do resolve the problem but haven't been successful. you can check out my site: www.holidaytravelhelp.com
