Travel Blog Exchange

Hi,
I guess this is where you post a discussion...
Well, I just started my travel blog at thewanderlife.com
I am loving it so far.
I have traveled a lot as a film producer/cruise ship staff, so I have a lot of stories to tell.
I have been looking at the top travel blogs on the web, and I was a bit taken aback by the poor quality of most of their content.
My question is: to whar extent do you guys think that the quality of your content does make a difference in terms of acquiring a loyal readership?
Thanks for replying.
Nice meeting you!

If the content is of poor quality, no one will even finish reading a post, never mind come back to read more. Bad blogs are a dime a dozen. Good content is a rare thing.
I see plenty of blogs that are very well presented but the content is poor, content is everything, some of the blogs I read I don't really like the lay out of the website but the content is good so I always go back.
I guess you are both right.
I think maybe what I meant is that as long as the content is practical and informative, people read it,
but I am not sure if truly GREAT writing is what the masses are after.
It is a neverending discussion, I guess.
In any case, when you do it from the heart, there is no way around it; you can´t write what sells, as opposed to what you really HAVE to write.

Nice to meet you both.

Now, what are your favorite travel blogs?
I still don´t have one...

I think it depends a lot on what people are looking for, in terms of content. What I might find boring someone else might really enjoy. I used to read a lot of travelogues, but now have moved to read more blog styles of stuff - with more info on travel instead of personal experiences. I'm not a huge fan of, "Spirit is chargeing for carry-on's" and then a link. Unless it's just the occasional thing in an otherwise substantive blog.
I somewhat have the same question. I have a lot of content on my site. I write all of it and some are very well written as some are personal posts where I am not taking in the time to lure a reader. I do all of my personal posts from the heart. I do some pay per posts, but very few. I would be more than happy to exchange links with you. My website is http://www.thetravellingtravelagent.com.
So what do you define as ' good content'?
Specific detail of places, accom, meals, transport, timetables etc?
Or an appreciation,or a different perception on a place/event?
Or a blog that leaves the reader with a new awareness, or leaves them thinking about issues they hadn't thought much about?
Personally I get bored reading too much specific detail.I don't want to know about what time the ferry leaves and how long it takes? All that info is available just by googling the ferry company site.
I started out blogging out of a conviction I can use our travel experiences to publicise wildlife conservation issues. Now I realise I'm up with a field full of really experienced bloggers who are darn good, and as varied in style as I could have never have imagined. And it's fun.But I've got a lot to learn, hence the questions.

My attempts so far....
Or an appreciation,or a different perception on a place/event?

I would say it's mainly this that I go for, like you say it doesn't matter to me exactly what someone did but more how the place/event made them feel. Again thought it doesn't need to be deep or publish worthy but just set out well and flows nicely.
Many of the blogs I follow are becuase of the people writing them more than anything, if the blogger seems friendly and is interactive with their readers I am a lot more interested, I follow a personality more than a journey more.

Did that make sense?
Agree Chris.
And how about this for a different perception of a place?

Kind of blew me away.
From everything I have read....CONTENT IS KING! It is what keeps your readers coming back. Sometimes I write a really good post that I am very proud of, then I get a lot of comments and all is good. Then, I can't quite make it up to the bar on the next post. I am trying to be more consistent with my style and I think that is important for your regular readers.
Keep your heart in it and you will be fine!! That is what makes blogging so unique.

If you are interested in exchanging links, let me know!

I visited your blog and I do like it a lot. I read about your trip through the Bermuda Triangle to Bermuda. When you go again, I would like to accompany you :) As far as quality of content, it does not matter. What matters is that people are interested in the same thing that you are. For example, the quality of food made by a chef may be extraordinary, but I am not interested in making of food. I am interested in travel like most people on here so I would be inclined to read your writings, not for quality, but for information with the opportunity to ask you questions about your experiences. I can write great excerpts about places all the time, but some readers like when you tell it straight to the point and not make it descriptive.
