to Border Breaker, firstly, what do you mean 'close friendships'? in what context? solo traveling is of course only for those who are comfortable and confident in traveling alone. there are times that you want to have company but the people you want or prefer to travel with are either busy-have obligations, not in for the adventure, can't take time off, sick or don't have the finances. I personally would not wait and build my schedule around others. I would just go =)

i'm trying to write a piece on solo travel and the challenge of cultivating and maintining close friendships if you travel a lot. How do you handle it? or are you just so independent, self-confident, and self-sufficient that you are your own best friend and don't need anyone else?
