Travel Blog Exchange

Hey guys,

I've been using StumbleUpon for a few months and I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I've been busy stumbling, giving "thumbs up" and subscribing to new people. It's been quite rewarding so far.

It would be great if we could share our experiences of Stumble Upon and any advice you have on getting the most out of it. If anyone has any questions about the service and ways to make it work better for you then I suggest we post them here.

StumbleUpon is undoubtedly a great idea with lots of potential for us travel bloggers. Lets share our experiences to help others.

Post your advice here now and personal experiences and questions.

You can find me on StumbleUpon here. Feel free to stumble me and say hi. I will of course return the favor.

Happy Stumbling

Matt

My Stumble address is http://www.stumbleupon.com/stumbler/skecanj/ -- please drop by to introduce yourself. I will take a look at your stumbled items and will stumble some of them. Interested in reciprocal stumblers.
Do you have any advice for other stumbleupon users? What have your experiences of SU been so far?
Hi All,

I am still waiting to see the big numbers that everyone talks about with SU. Although, I am getting about 500 new visitors per month from SU at the moment, which is nice.

Recently I have been told that SU likes it when people have reviews and thumb ups of their user page. It will even show up in the right hand statistics under "Reviews." So I would encourage people to review each other when they subscribe to new SU peeps.

I can be found here: http://www.stumbleupon.com/stumbler/tawassel/

Another thing that I am planning to try is finding certain reviews useful. You can click Yes when you hover over reviews. I'm not sure if this is will help but I assume it will increase the authority of stumblers.
Is it possible to choose to review every time you thumbs up? Or do we just rely on StumbleUpon randomly choosing which thumbs up require a review from us?
No, you can review each time. It is good practice and other's tell me it helps to increase your authority on the site as it shows you are actually reading the webpages etc. If you have the tool bar you can just click on the text bubble to leave a review.
Or you can go into your favorites and click edit and write your review in there. I think this is a great idea for a group. SU is such a huge tool but it is baffling. One day I got over 1k hits from it but the next day it was back down to about 100. I really don't know why. I was always stumbling my own things and liking everything that people sent to me (for the most part) but I've read that you can't do that. I've slowly been stopping that and the numbers have been lower.

Believe it or not I actually made up an SU spreadsheet last week because I am trying to do trial and error to figure out what really is triggering the big hits.
I'd love to know the results of your spreadsheet! I've heard so many conflicting stories about SU. Some say never thumbs-up your own website as SU knows what you're doing. Others say you should to help promote your own website. I'd like to know which is best!
I've also heard that if the same people thumbs-up your content repeatedly it decreases the strength of each thumbs-up. Basically StumbleUpon knows which members stumble which members and keeps tabs on how many times you thumbs up your friends. while some thumbs up are good too many can lead to SU suspecting something is up.

This is what I've read anyway. Does anybody have any proof of this? Or maybe the opposite is true? Maybe loyalty and friendship is rewarded?
Hey guys, how are you doing. Great to meet you both at Travel Tribe last week. We're now in Montreal and loving it and working on the site around the clock. Just came across this post serendipitously and thought I'd say hello. We've started using SU, but have mostly refrained from posting our own stuff. Prob is if your post doesn't get posted, it doesn't get any traffic love. I realise you get less authority if you post your own stuff, but less authority is better than absolutely no traffic. Anyway, we're still working on it. There have been bigger fish to fry. :)
Hope to be back here more often!! Learning loads about SU.

Please come by.. say Hi.
We're still looking for more experiences with Stumble Upon. What has worked for you? Have you had any success? Any advice you could share with us on the best way to make the most of SU?
HI All,

I haven't stopped by here in a while but I am happy to say that I did have a relatively high day for SU the other day. It sent about 300 people to my site in one day and since them has referred more people than normal. I'm not sure what has changed other than using the stumble group here, stumbling my own posts more, and stumbling A LOT of other people to get my number of reviews etc up.

Cheers
Todd
