Help using twitter and this group

Hi I done a bit of research but can't find an answer I understand so hoping someon here can help me. I would like to follow (and be followed) through twitter. I have figured out if I click the @twittername the it will take me to the persons page. I can then click follow - which will add me to that persons list.

However, in one of the discussion threads it said DM the person once we had followed them. How do you do this? When I try and send a direct message it looks like unless the person has follwed me back I can't communicate with them.

Am I doing something wrong?

You are correct, you can only send a DM to people who follow you. And use DMs sparingly even in that case. Some people like me send DMs to my cell phone.

Thanks for the answer Chris. It was puzzling me how I could DM someone when there seemed now way to DM them! When you are new at something it is easy to think you are going 'mad'. Glad I am sane!
