Oh Canada?

I hopped a plane back to my homeland 10 days ago, on the 8th of March. I arrived at the airport way earlier than necessary and spent a few hours basking in the parking lot sun as I waited to take off. My third plane trip was as uneventful as the others. I lucked out and was assigned with a window seat. The views were incredible during the first 10 minutes of the flight as we flew over the Sea of Cortez with a birds eye view of the peninsula. The couple who were sitting next to me were looking…See More

Taco Time.

Hey. I'm in Mexico. It's rather warm here. I crossed the border through the infamous Tijuana on the first. It wasn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be. The worst aspect was it's air quality. It was a rough uphill ride breathing mostly exhaust. My companions, Laurel and Chris were very fast and perseverent. We made a wrong turn, despite our intentions to ride on the free road, we ended up en route to the toll road. Traffic was roaringly busy. I was scared. The shoulder was big enough for…See More

Waterbed.

It was difficult for me to drag myself away from the beaches of sunny California, but a couple weeks ago I did just that. I ventured east, inland, to Morning Star Ranch with the intention of Wwoofing there for a couple of weeks. I was warmly welcomed and somewhat surprised to discover a community of sixty some people tending to a 140 acre farm. The farm included 900 grapefruit trees, 1500 avocados, a 5 acre garden, a few milking cows and goats, and a flock of chickens. The majority of my labor…See More

LA LA LA

The dessert is a great place to ride a bicycle. There is no shortage of sunshine. Nobody lives there, so nobody minds where you choose to set up camp. On Sunday I said farewell to the folks at Aquarius Ranch, and rolled out with my friend Tim, headed towards LA. Toward the beach. We picked a nice route which avoided the major roads, and would take us through the San Bernardino National Forest. This ride involved an intense uphill climb from about 2500ft to 7000ft over 8 miles. It was perilous,…See More

Cold Desert.

A few weeks ago, my friends and I took a couple days off from the olive orchard and vineyard to explore the city of San Fransico. It was an enjoyable experience. We went shopping for vintage clothing, and had a little dance party in our hotel room. When we returned to the ranch we were informed by the proprietors that they wanted a holiday from all the Wwoofer action, and so they asked the workers to leave. This was rather surprising. So Eric, the farm owner, gave us a ride back to San…See More

Hotel California.

I like olives. For the past couple weeks I've been involved in a work exchange at an organic farm in California; about an hour north of San Fransico. This is organized through an organization known as Wwofing (World Wide Oppurtunities on Organic Farms.). It's been just great. The team has been busy picking olives, pruning grapevines, and doing work in the winery; pressing grapes and such. The house high in the mountains-above the fog. Every morning the valleys surrounding the farm are filled…See More

Slow and steady.

Steve and I are still making our way slowly south. I figure our daily average is an incredible 20-25 miles a day. Now we're visiting the library and getting food in the city of Ukiah. Yesterday was intense. We slept in a church the night before-with permission from the pastor. It was had heat and light and all those nice things which I was hoping California would have plenty of. It was pouring when we woke up, so I poured myself a couple cups of coffee to help get into the idea of cycling. I…See More

Steve.

It's a place in the woods. Very rainy. Covered in fog. We found our way here in the dark. Me and my friend Steve-we've been riding together since my first day in Calfiornia. I passed him going up a huge hill just South of Crescent City. He's got this big baby trailer towed behind his bicycle. It says "Baby on board". I thought, "Who is that crazy mother biking up this intense hill with no shoulder?" Turns out it was Steve. He's got this shirt, an advertisment for 7-up. On the front it says Make…See More

Don't feed the wildlife.

Once upon a time, on a rare sunny day, I sat alone on a driftwood log on beautiful Cannon Beach in Northern Oregon. I was minding my own business, enjoying a sandwich of cheese, hummus and red peppers, when all of a sudden a seagull flew at my face and took a bite of my sandwich at the same time as I was. I was rather startled. He kept trying, but I was ready to defend myself with waving arms and kicking feet. It was scared and decided to eat sand instead. The following day, I regrouped with…See More

Best bicycle malfunction ever.

There was this one decieving hill on washingtons coast. It didn't look very steep, but was incredibly difficult to ride up. I was getting tired, and I couldn't tell if it was me or the bike that was slowing me down. I hopped off at the next available spot to find out. I checked my rear tire first and found it was low on air, so I filled it up. I checked my front tire and found it was rather flat. I tried to fix it, but the hole was very tough to find. While I was working on my repair, I was…See More

Rainy Days

Somebody in Mt. Vernon reccomended that I alter my route to ride down the length of Whidbey Island. She assured me I would not be dissapointed by the natural beauty of the area, and implied that I would be dissapointed if I took the route I had previously intended to. So I followed her advice, biked across a bridge and made my way to Deception Pass State Park. I was a little bit dissapointed after all the hype, but the place was gorgeous nevertheless. If it werent for all the really old people…See More
