"Hi,
I took the MatadorU course back in September 2009. I think they've changed the format a little bit, and they didn't have the photography course when I took it.
For me the course was worth it. I didn't have a writing…"

My name is Alouise. I'm 26 and living in Edmonton, Canada. I am not travelling around the world, or studying abroad. I am studying professional writing at school, a four year program I just began.
I'm an unlikely travel blogger or writer. But the truth is I love to travel. It's like music, always in my head, always there, humming, background noise until I can't ignore it. I have a compulsion to look at airfar prices when I should be studying, to read travel blogs when I should be working.
While I haven't done a lot of extensive travelling, I am a big travel supporter. Only a few years ago I was working at a job I hated, thinking I was stuck in a life not meant for me.
Some people can easily leave. But for me it hasn't been a sudden change. It's been a series of small realizations. And a trip to Seattle in 2005 started it all. In 2009 I enrolled in MatadorU's travel writing program because I wanted to see what travel writing is about.
I'm taking a writing program in school because I just love to write in general, and I wanted to see what options are out there. I haven't narrowed anything down. I don't know if travel writing is definitely in my professional future or not.
But I can say I love to travel and to write, and hopefully I can mix the two together. I've had a blog for a couple years, and just moved it to my own website. I try to focus on the unlikely traveler, the person who's stuck and doesn't know if they can take a big step to break free. Sometimes a small step is all you need to move you to a better life.
