Berlin: How to cure ‘Ostalgie’ in three easy steps

Ostalgie? What’s that, some kind of infection? Not exactly. In the words of Wikipedia, Ostalgie is a German term referring to nostalgia for aspects of life in East Germany. It is derived from the German words Ost (east) and Nostalgie (nostalgia).Oh right. ‘Good Bye Lenin’, Trabants and pining for the good old days of the GDR…Amongst other symptoms. The trouble is that visitors to Berlin can quite easily miss learning about the realities of life on the other side of that infamous Wall. This is…See More

It wasn’t when I lived there, and there was massive opposition to the idea of relocating all those politicians from Bonn, just like there were huge demonstrations against the idea of Berlin hosting the Olympics in 2000. But while the latter bid failed Berlin regained its…See More

"Enjoyed reading this. You're spot on. That's us, in a nutshell :) Perhaps mention the peculiar habit of eating odd food for Christmas, fish soaked in lye and all that... Oh, and personally, I think peanut butter is way stranger than brown…"

Spot the difference: Photos show how Berlin has changed since 1990

What a difference 22 years makes…

I had the pleasure of living and working in Berlin from 1990-92 and have been back many times since. I was rummaging around in my box of old (printed) photos from those days and took a few of them with me the last time I was in the German capital earlier this month with a view to taking some comparable pictures in 2012 to document the differences.  The quality of the originals isn’t that great but the dramatic changes that have taken place in the…
