Hi Doris and everyone! Mostly I agree with Anne's comments. I think a majority of BBs distinguish themselves as travelers rather than tourists. They want to truly experience a place, culture and people and avoid seek to avoid the places most…

Everyone welcome but I would like to focus discussions on travelers in this age group (approx. 45 to 65) and our needs, likes and dislikes in traveling. Let me know areas of interest to you.

Proof of life

My friend and partner in India, Jaimala Gupta, wrote to me a few days ago. She described going to Amer and meeting with the adminstrative office there. She was representing 24 children that live at Vasalya's children's home, "Udayan." She was there to present proof of their existence and to claim custodial representation. She left the office, after some hours, with Life Certificates... the first proof that these 24 children ever existed. She did the same thing last year for a similar number of…See More

18 million children

18 million children live on the streets of India. Some are slum dwellers who spend their days working on the streets, often to bring in revenue for the family, and some spend 24 hours a day on the streets, scrounging for their next meal and a safe place to spend the night. These children deserve a childhood in a safe, loving and nurturing environment. In 2007, I had the opportunity to spend 3 months at a home for orphaned and abandoned children and witnessed the profound work that one NGO is…See More

There is a magical place on this earth and it is called Udayan. This children's village is run by Vatsalya (www.vatsalya.org) and houses 55+ orphaned or abandoned children.

India and voluntourism

India is the perfect place to go for a volunteer vacation. It is a vast country with incredible sights, fabulous food and wonderful people. It is also a country with many needs. There are currently 18 million children living on the streets of India. To learn more about how you can help, please see our website, www.nicfund.org. If you are interested in volunteering on behalf of children, women and or issues involving public health please see www.vatsalya.org. Vatsalya is an Indian-led NGO working to better the lives of its people. I spent 3 months volunteering at their children's home, Udayan. It was an experience that changed my life. I'd love to tell you more!

Hi Delta

How nice to reconnect after all of this time. I was away for the weekend and didn't have time to respond before I left for the mountains.

We're now living in Costa Rica after nine months in Mexico. We'll be moving again in November but we don't know where we'll be going.

My husband Jacob is teaching English as a Foreign Language and really enjoying it. We'll move to wherever he gets a job after his current contract ends.

I've been working on writing my travel book. Still working on the book proposal that I will use to get an agent who will then get me a publisher. Could be a year or more before we get to that point.

I've been thinking quite a bit about Vasalya as I write the sample chapter (I need to write two for the book proposal) on Why We Travel. One of the sections deals with 'traveling with a mission' which will include reasons for travel such as learning a language, doing volunteer work, etc.

Jacob and I were quite impressed with Vasalya when we visited and I'd like to use it as an example in the book chapter for the proposal. What do you think?

If Baby Boomers wanted to volunteer there, what kind of work would they do (I know this depends in part on their backgrounds and how long they intend to stay)? Do volunteers pay to work there or could they go for free? When we were there, we noticed that the volunteers were mostly young 'uns - university age - but would there be meaningful work for Baby Boomer-aged volunteers?

Look forward to hearing from you and to keeping in touch.

Shanna, I think you'll find the networking -- meeting other bloggers -- is pretty cool. And some of the seminars and info, too. I think if you go with limited expectations, you won't be disappointed.
