I don't know how many of you are members of About55, an on-line community for baby boomers. I write an occasional travel blog there which I will make more regular as I dedicate more time to it. So far, I've written a series on traveling to Costa Ri…

It's ironic that our travel fears and what makes the best stories are the exact same thing. When your undertaking a 26-month round the world trip - as my husband and I did a few years ago - you know you're going to get a few stories out of it. In S…

Even experienced travelers make mistakes that leave them kicking themselves as they reflect on what they did wrong. But as more mature individuals they do have more life experience to get themselves out of trouble before things get too sticky. Read…

Thanks for the reference back to your post, Donna. I had read it and it didn't occur to me that the reference wasn't clear. It was an excellent story, by the way, which everyone -- not just women -- should read and follow the advice given by the exp…

I haven't traveled alone a lot but I do enjoy it. I always meet a lot more people because I tend to chat more with fellow travelers and seat mates while when traveling with my husband I don't do that as much. I've met many people who wouldn't travel…

It's great story Karen. I wonder if our bizarre wedding stories have led to stronger marriages. We certainly love recounting how we met, how we managed a long distance relationship (pre-email, IMs, and cheap long distance), and getting married for i…

This ExPat Life: International Fashion

I may not be a fashionista but I know what I like. Or, rather, what I don't like. Fashion in China is as Westernized as possible with a few quirks that I haven't seen elsewhere in my travels around the world. Check it out for yourself at: http://www.dorisgallan.com/articles/this-ex-pat-life/international-fashion/

Traveling in Northern China

The classic – stereotypical, even – places to see in northern China include the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Tiananmen Square, and the Great Wall. A more recent addition is the “Bird’s Nest” – the stadium that was the heart of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Each of these has been hyped up so much that visitors may wonder what all the fuss is about when they finally see for themselves these wonders of China. The best place to prepare and understand is in history. Whether you read it… Continue

Hi Doris,

Thanks for the warm welcome to the group. Hi everyone, I'm happy to be here. I'm still ramping up with this site but will be sure to post some of my travel stories and thoughts very soon. But quickly, I live in NYC, am 51, travel alone most of the time but am open to traveling with others. Have been traveling a lot to Hawaii for years now, Iceland, Europe, Canada, etc., and have my sights on Italy, Spain, South East Asia, Africa, Candian Rockies, Japan, etc.

Warmly,
Craig

ThankX for the invitation in Doris. Selling my 6 acre orchid property here on Queensland's Sunshine Coast and as soon as a deal is set I'm off like a shot to Malaysia/Singapore to gather in more orchids stories. Maybe some of your friends can help with a lead. It's been four years since I've seen Asia and could use a bit of orchid update. Best MaX
