a small intro

I'm an American addicted to travel and life abroad. At 18 I moved to China (Dalian then Shanghai), and worked in journalism and tech start-ups. My blog, The China Bubble, is a photoblog from my time in China.

After I graduated uni in 2010, I moved to Singapore on a whim and found a job in reality television. I spent those 15 months also actively exploring Southeast Asia thanks to my Singapore base.

This year, I've switched continents and am learning to live as a local in Paris!

Dandong and the North Korean Border

In mid-November I went with my friends from my old study abroad group on an excursion to Dandong. It's a border city right on the China-North Korea line. Danny, our director, rented a van and picked me up from my apartment at 6:20 in the morning. It was a three and a half hour drive from Dalian, during which we mostly slept.

When we arrived, we were at a riverbank, staring at a barren strip of land across from us. I joked, Please tell me that's North Korea...and it was! We took a… Continue

Hi Edna, thanks for your reply. I will look into those things you have mentioned (all new to me, haven't heard of them - though hubbie is in IT so he probably knows...). We will only find out next year if we go or not, but if we do I am probably going to have lots of questions. China is such an unknown for me - never been there, I just know that there culture is so different to ours.

A lot of people think I'm still in Shenzhen...sometimes I do wish I was still in China (though a different city would be nice).

Thanks, Edna! I'm behind of video editing because of my job that's allowing me to travel around the world is really busy right now. But I should be releasing a few new videos soon. :)

Checked out your blog and really like the pics. I really want to go to China soon.

Hey Edna, thanks for the comment! I love some of the photos on your blog (I hope to be able to look a bit further after leaving this msg). As for where I want to go...hmm...anywhere and everywhere!! There are the obvious places (Bangkok, Singapore, Sydney, LA etc etc) but I'd like to stray off the beaten path as well, although I'm not 100% about this bit yet. I'd love to see some of South America (although I'm slightly scared of it) and definitely the Cook Islands. I hope to look more into less touristy type places in the coming months but would be glad for any suggestions!!! Have you travelled much? jen x

Hi Edna!! Thanks for your comment! I'll be blogging about how to learn languages this year - but generally you just need to go to the country and avoid expats entirely, and just go out with locals. It forces you to learn the language quickly. Once you learn one, the rest come much easier, especially if they are in the same language family like the western European languages I've learned so far.

To constantly travel I got an Internet based job - you'll find a lot of people on this site fund their travels through their blog. I'm not at that stage yet, although I am making a wee bit of money from it. I'm a freelance translator by trade and it's all e-mail based, but any job that you just need a computer to do it on, you can take it with you as you travel. I've only had this job for 2 years. Before that I got any old job in each place I travelled to.
Hope that helps! Hope to run into you during my travels, or yours!!
