Kerry-Ann replied to Greg Wesson's discussion Do You Join Groups of Other Expats from Your Home Country? in the group Expat Bloggers
"The consenses seems to be to use the expat groups to help settle in and find out how things work - if in a foreign language country. But most of us seem to look for other nationalities to mix with rather than seeking our own."

Karen van der Zee replied to Greg Wesson's discussion Do You Join Groups of Other Expats from Your Home Country? in the group Expat Bloggers
"If your language is English and you move to a country where the official language is also English you are at a great advantage in terms of connecting with the locals, and you may have no need to hang out with other expat. Not so easy when you move…"

Greg Wesson replied to Balanced Melting Pot's discussion What has been the biggest blog challenge for you while abroad? in the group Expat Bloggers
"I have struggled with this as well. I had a blog where I wrote about my travels, but since I have become an expat and more settled, I shifted the focus of my blog to life as an expat. Finding the right tone has been an issue since then. I find my…"

"Thanks for validation Nancie. I had a thought as I read your reply. Sometimes I meet South Africans that I am 'supposed' to be friends with because they are foreigners. However, they are the type of person I would stay clear of in South…"

Kerry-Ann replied to Greg Wesson's discussion Do You Join Groups of Other Expats from Your Home Country? in the group Expat Bloggers
"It never occured to us to join expat communities. We have lived in four different countries - all of them till now have been English speaking. When we left South Africa we wanted to meet other cultures, learn about them and experience their way of…"

Cathy Dobson replied to Greg Wesson's discussion Do You Join Groups of Other Expats from Your Home Country? in the group Expat Bloggers
"I definitely try to spend most of my time with the locals. I'm a Brit living in Germany, but most of my friends are German here. I got to know a lot of them through my kids going to the local schools or playing in local sports teams. But I also…"

"It's depended highly on the situation. I'm on my third international move - 2007-2009, Japan; 2009-2010, Ireland, 2010-onward, Italy. In Japan, I was working for an English school, so I was surrounded by other native-English speakers.…"

Monkeys With Suitcases: The Biological Imperative To Tavel

It is in our genes, in our genetic code, to be explorers, adventurers and travellers. As life has evolved from the primordial ooze to the wide diversity that exists on our little blue-green rock today, at every step the beings that eventual evolved into us where the ones that got out there, took the chance and made a move. We are chance-takers by genetic necessity. If we weren’t, we would have died out, or evolved into something very different, like rhesus monkeys, sheep or catfish. Overall in… Continue

Existential Migration: Feeling At Home As the Foreigner

Last year, I picked up and moved to London. I quit a decent job in Canada, where I had a bunch of friends and family, and moved to a country where I had no job, no friends and no where to live. When people I knew asked me "why are you moving?", I couldn't really come up with a decent answer, other than "it feels like it is what I have to do." Despite struggling to define myself in my new country, to find a job and make some new friends, I am much happier now.

Tell Someone: How to Get over the Fear of Travel.

If you ever read the travel forums I do, you’ll have come across the question many times. “I want to go travelling, but I am scared. I don’t know that I can do it? How will I know if I will be okay? How can I quit my job? How can I tell my friends, my family and my significant other?”

Sometimes, I need a little push to take that step and make the big change. In those cases, nothing quite ensures that I will take the steps than a little external pressure from those who know me. Tell… Continue
