Learning Lima

(cross-posted from www.knkexplore.wordpress.com)

Familiarity with a city grows organically in my mind. Neighborhoods are muscles, the streets veins, the routes along them the tendons that tie it all together. As Rob and I have revisited some of Peru's more chaotic cities like Lima and Trujillo, I've found myself reflecting on how I've come to know them.

Two months in Peru, and counting.

Two months ago today we set foot on Peruvian soil after a pretty grueling 24-hour journey. If any of you remember our original plan way, way back in the day, we had intended on spending only a month in Peru before heading south to Bolivia, with Chile being our final destination.

As you may have noticed, though, we're still here. We haven't even gone south of Lima (where all the traditional Gringo… Continue

I don't know how much we can change the way men react to us since they have their own cultures and histories that are completely foreign to us. However, we can change how we behave. I have certainly had this unwanted attention abroad and at…

Hello!  My husband and I have just launched an online magazine for travelers to South America.  Our goal is to feature off-the-beaten-path destinations, and to highlight the people and culture of the places we visit as much as the places themselves. We're looking to publish great stories from all over South America, and to include as many different voices as we can!We can't pay right now, as we're just starting up, but come check us out:<a href="http://www.unpavedsouthamerica.com">Unpaved…See More

Solo travel and unwanted attention

I traveled solo for years before marrying a fellow free-spirit this last summer. We're in Peru right now, and I've been doing a lot of thinking about the difference it makes walking the streets with Rob.Over at lets.go.girl magazine, AJ had a post about being the guy who deflects unwanted attention from his female friends, and how to handle a delicate situation without reinforcing the patriarchal structures that created it in the first place:…See More

I've been thinking a lot about what it's been like traveling as a married woman as opposed to my single gal days, and I mused about it in this post: On Damsels in Distress. Any other gals (or guys!) have thoughts to add?

How soon is too soon to start attending conferences and events?

I have a 2 month old travel blog that I have been working very hard to establish.  What I am trying to figure out is how soon is too soon to start attending travel events and conferences? Will it be a boost to my blog at this point, or will it be a relative waste of time?  Is it too soon to start networking and making contacts?  What do you think?Have any of you attended any conferences or events, and what was your experience? Thanks so much for your input,Shanna…See More
