Fancy Something Unusual? Try the Iberian Mask Festival in Lisbon, Portugal

The last thing I expected to see in the grid of shopping streets in Lisbon's Baixa district was a couple of men in hessian suits wearing blood red devil masks. They weren't alone, either. A very odd couple with distorted, bubble gum pink papier maché faces danced past me and the other bemused onlookers to the beat of the drums of a marching band.…See More

The Princess of the Dão's facelift

The rejuvenating properties of white cement are noticeable in the lakeside town of Santa Comba Dão (aka the 'Princess of the Dão) in central Portugal. Like botox for buildings, the cement has been used extensively to smooth out the deep gaps that had formed between the granite blocks of traditional buildings. The rough stones are now boldly outlined in white, creating a lace-like effect around the smaller ones and a dramatic background for the chunkier ones.…See More

Tempted by Chocolate in Óbidos, Portugal

An attempt to beat the crowds at last year's international chocolate festival in Óbidos backfired on me. Having been warned that the town's narrow medieval streets would be teeming with families on Sunday afternoon, I decided to delay my visit until the following day, hoping things would be a bit calmer.I arrived on Monday morning to find the town almost deserted except for gangs of cleaners busy removing sticky  chocolate-smeared and cherry-stained rubbish from the gutters and overflowing…See More

A while ago, I promised to have a go at the A to Z of Travel that's been going around so here it is.A: Age you started travelling? The first time I flew, I was 23 and on a package holiday to one of the Greek islands. My Personal A to Z Challenge

I set myself a blog challenge at the beginning of January which has turned out to be a very popular one. So popular, in fact that you might like to join in.Inspired by other A to Z challenges, I decided to write a series of posts about Portugal, one for each letter of the alphabet. The main criterion was that each post should be about something I cared about, making it a …See More

Chestnuts, wine and honey in Lousã, Portugal

November 11th is St Martin's day, and is eagerly awaited by many Portuguese people, especially those who make their own wine as this is the first day that the new batch of wine is ready for tasting. Happily, it coincides with the chestnut harvest and the date conjures up images of hot, roasted chestnuts with a glass of wine in many a mind.In Lousã, there's an extra ingredient thrown into the mix; the locally produced honey. Take a walk through the forested mountains that loom over this central…See More

Scarecrow Festival in Coimbra, Portugal

In my village, most people just hang plastic sacks or old clothes on sticks in a bid to keep pesky birds off their crops. However, even scarecrows have to dress to impress at a festival, which explains the party clothes and elaborate faces of the exhibits in Coimbra’s 8th annual scarecrow festival. Some are even wearing crowns,…See More

The Unexpected Pleasures of Cascalheira River Beach, Portugal

The river Alva flows more or less past our house in Moura Morta. Unfortunately, even in August it's so cold that your feet turn blue and start to hurt after more than a minute in its waters so while it's great for cooling beers in, there's no chance that I'll be swimming in it.Assuming that this iciness was an inherent feature of…See More
