Samoa Tsunami Hero. Meet 'Otele'

Lalomanu Beach, Samoa. Four days after the Tsunami. The bodies have been carried away and the funerals are over. But the beach still looks exactly as it did a few hours after the wave struck. Smoking ruins.Sandals, sunscreen, pillows, cell phones and passports still lie scattered among the splintered wood of the fales, piled up against the the coconut palms, snapped off at chest level by the force of the wave. After helping some of the families on the beach, one of the locals heard me asking who…See More

The Magical Streets of Kathmandu

Young Monks at Bodhnath temple, Kathmandu

Kathmandu. It’s magic. Pure Magic. And this is only day two! After my 22 hour flight here, I got to my hostel but I couldn’t sleep. I was so excited to be back in the old city! I walked out to Durbar square and spent the afternoon there. It’s the old part of town with narrow alleyways, cobbled streets and a big open square surrounded by…

The Long Way to Paradise: An Exciting Journey to the World's Best Secret Beach. Part III

National Park of American Samoa

The National Park of American Samoa. The 50th US National Park. Remote, extraordinarily beautiful and refreshingly different from any of the others. It's the only one south of the equator. Of all the National Parks, only Aniakchak in Alaska sees fewer visitors. It's the best kept secret in the South Pacific. The park consists of three…

The Long Way to Paradise: An Exciting Journey to the World's Best Secret Beach Part II

Tutuila island at night.

"Pacific Midnight" Tutuila island at night.

“Can you take this backpack with you to Ta’u?”

“Excuse me?”

We were back at Tutuila airport. We didn’t know this guy. “You are going to Ta’u today,…

The Long Way to Paradise: An Exciting Journey to the World's Best Secret Beach. Part I

Liquid Landscape

The lagoon at Lalomanu beach

“Have you ever been to the Manu’a Islands?” I asked Litia.

“No. But they are supposed to be extremely beautiful. And my grandmother told me that ghosts live out there.”

Cheri and I had been exploring the beautiful…

Great post Michael. We lived in Samoa for 2 1/2 years from 2004 (we're in Cambodia now). We woke halfway round the world to news of the tsunami and spent the next day hit repeatedly by waves of emotion as we tried to contact friends and piece together news from the internet. I was particularly worried about one friend who lived near Sinalei which was badly effected. I eventually saw her picture on a New Zealand news website carrying a sink up the beach and knew at least she was alive.
Physical recovery and rebuilding is one thing but as Samoans find it hard to be open about their feelings and there are very few trained professional Samoan therapists or psychologists, I think the emotional rebuilding will take much longer. I still feel incredibly sad that some of the beautiful places, including picture postcard Lalomanu beach, that were such a big part of our lives have been scarred and that the Samoan people usually so quick to smile are hurting so much. We didnt lose any of the friends we still keep in touch with but many of those friends did lose relatives and some have horrific stories that are now a part of their memories. Mum sent me this link yesterday http://www.3news.co.nz/Campbell-Lives-Samoa-Christmas-Special-part-one/tabid/367/articleID/134748/Default.aspx
of Lalomanu beach today(there are 3 parts). I thought you might be interested.Tanya
