Lucky Last Night in L.A.

It was my first time. I swear I only had one drink. And really, it was more a matter of chance than anything else, but it happened. I won bingo at Hamburger Mary's in West Hollywood. According to my friend Nancy, I've been "WeHo'd."

We were attending a bingo night benefit at the popular LGBT haunt. These "legendary bingo" nights happen… Continue

Getting Around In and Out of L.A.

I got up at 5:15 yesterday morning to catch the Rapid 733 bus from Mar Vista to Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. The bus took about 55 minutes. My primary journey was on the Amtrak Surfliner up the California coast to San Luis Obispo, a 5 hour train ride, to meet up with my friend Jay for 24 hours. The goal? Enjoy the view.

On Monday, the day before my trip up the coast, I ventured into West Hollywood to lunch with my friend John at the Farmer's Market, next to the Disney-like… Continue

The Wackness That is L.A.

Charming, beautiful, ageless strangers in their best cocktail wear at Bar Chloe in Santa Monica on New Year's Eve, with too-expensive Stella Artois, warm bodies lightly touching as they move through the crowded club, silky fabrics, dim lights and dance rhythms pounding...it was a great way to spend the holiday. I met a group of wonderful ladies (including a jewelry designer whose elegant pieces you can order… Continue

The Places We Think We Hate...and Love

One of the many travel bloggers I follow recently posted a thoughtful piece on how much he hates Los Angeles. The point of the entry was not "why I hate L.A." but rather "why DO I hate L.A.?" Why does anyone "hate" a place where they have never lived, or possibly never even been? I could apply this just as easily to why some people "hate" certain public figures like Oprah or Michael Moore. How can you…

Hi Jan.  There is a lot to see in Ethiopia, most of which I did not get the chance to see for myself...notably the rock-hewn churches in the highlands north of Addis and the hottest place on earth, the Danakil Depression.  These are on my…

Hi, I am envious. To have he opportunity for an advanced degree in your subject! Sure it's a "long haul." But it's a long haul now or a long haul later. At a bargain counter here in Bangkok, I just picked up "Smithsonian…

Hi Jan, thanks for the comment.  My academic studies, eh?  Well, the short version is that I study human evolution via the fossil record, but I'm taking a semester off and trying to decide if I still want a PhD.  It's a long…

i expect to return some time soon and head south of Addis.   I did not see any of that part of the country.

Will you be returning?  I'd love to join a "dig."

For what I did see, please take a look at my website....www.travelwithjan.com.  Hope we can continue to talk.

At a bargain counter here in Bangkok, I just picked up "Smithsonian Intimate guide to Human Origins" by Carl Zimmer. Last year I read "Before the Dawn" see link below.
I am thinking that rather living in one place for a month or a semester, why not just pack a bag and keep traveling. It's the best education and motivator.
I am planning a trip to Ethiopia in April, for Passover in Gonder. Maybe we can meet there? I would love a tour of the Rift Valley.

Thanks so much for checking out my blog. Your point is another thing that is a bit insensitive. I always ask before taking photos and I make a point to show them the photo I've taken of them as well. It always brings a smile to their faces and it's such a great way to connect with the local people!

Hi Pamela,

Thank you for your lovely comment, you're too nice. I'm glad you like my photos but I am really only an amateur. Would like to improve, though... Maybe a photography workshop some day...
Love your pictures too!
Cheers,
Simon

How soon is too soon to start attending conferences and events?

I have a 2 month old travel blog that I have been working very hard to establish.  What I am trying to figure out is how soon is too soon to start attending travel events and conferences? Will it be a boost to my blog at this point, or will it be a relative waste of time?  Is it too soon to start networking and making contacts?  What do you think?Have any of you attended any conferences or events, and what was your experience? Thanks so much for your input,Shanna…See More
