Marcia Mayne said… You're welcome, Roxanne!
If you have time when you come to NY, give me a shout. I'll come to Brooklyn and see you.

Marcia Mayne said… Congratulations, Roxanne, I've nominated you for a blog award!
Marcia Mayne said… Yup, a good site. Love looking at the food but I get hungry and homesick.
Re the restaurant: I found this on jamaicans.com 'cause I couldn't remember what city it's in. (The ambassador, Wayne McCook, is someone i know. Saw him just before he left.)
Check this out -- a flash mob in Union Square. Jamaica in My Head --

First Jamaican restaurant in China
Published Jul 27, 2007The official opening to the Cho-Cho Jamaican restaurant in Hangzhou China was held July 8th. On hand were The Ambassador from Jamaica, Wayne McCook, officials from the city of Hang Zhou and Zhejiang province, Glendon Thompson, owner, Carmen Allen chef, Zhang Bingyang and Xiao Jing partners. The Red Army's military band provided the fanfare music. Reggae was played on violins.
Marcia Mayne said… i did hear of a Jamaican who opened a restaurant in Beijing, I think. It's probably not the same person tho.
Here's a link to the Jamaican Eats site - http://www.jamaicaneats.com/

Reminds me of when I lived in Ottawa in the 70s -- there was really not much Jamaican food anywhere. I used to live by stuff my mom sent to me. What I miss is breadfruit, especially ripe roast breadfruit and some good ackee and saltfish - yummy!!!!!
Your grandpa's fritters sound delicious! Hope your mom can bring you some when she visits -- or at least bring you some salt fish and make some.
Chat soon,

Marcia Mayne said… It was an eye opener, Roxanne, even for me.
I can't wait, things are coming together...speaking of Jamaica. Do you know about the magazine, Jamaican Eats? Each time I get it, I think we've exhausted everything there is to know about Jamaican food, but then she comes up with another topic. As you know, food is such a big part of our lives!
Say, what kinds of foods do you miss?

Marcia Mayne said… Honestly, Roxanne, if I had to choose a travel itinerary, it'd be very difficult. There isn't a place I don't want to see!
But one of the things I recognize is that we don't know Jamaica. Every time I go back -- at least annually -- I try to see one place I didn't know before. When we were in high school, for graduation our teacher organized a one-day trip around Jamaica. I've never forgotten that experience. But there are a number of little things right in our backyards that we take for granted. Hence the idea to document it.
You should get the PBS special Henry Gates did on blacks in Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Brazil. Eye opening! Ask your folks to bring you a copy.
I'd love to return to Cuba and spend a month there! Or maybe just spend a month in the Caribbean, Haiti, the DR, Carriacou, Tobago, all more or less off the beaten path. There's a lot of world to explore!!
So right now, I'm packing up, trying to get a subtenant and hoping to be out of here by next month or latest August. I've been wanting to leave since March!
Getting ready to ditch NYC,
Marcia
Marcia Mayne said… Girl, of course I'd love to be in China!!!
Just yesterday, one of my friends who went with us to SA email about a trip to Thailand and we agreed to go next year. Honestly, my goal is to just chuck it all for 6-12 months and travel. I need to figure out how to do it and just take the plunge. I've met so many bloggers who are doing /have done it. Every time I talk to, read/hear about someone else doing it, I get so jealous. I know I'll do it, but first I have to get out of here for a 6-month sabbatical a yard! I plan to travel and getting to know all 14 parishes and blogging about it. I have that all planned out and looking forward to it.
Okay, I'll put some questions together and send them to you. You do the same. I can't wait, this will be fun!!!
Talk soon,
Marcia
