Cuba: Land of Sun, Salsa & Rum

Cuba was always on my travel list for the longest time, but the idea of a touristy, all-inclusive package to an island that still represents the 1950s was completely unappealing.  I have always been resistant to the catered tour packages of all-you-can-eat, drink and tan, simply because I am a poor drinker, have my natural Indian glow and prefer self-planning. However, after some research and much pondering, an all-inclusive was the most economical way to visit this island and a good option for…See More

Turkey: Bright Sun & Strong Coffee!

Istanbul: a combination of Bombay and any other U.A.E state (except Dubai). IHome to a very advanced and clean (marble flooring in the metro system) public transport network, mediocre English is widely spoken, heavy traffic and congestion and the concept of standing in line is completey unheard of.In no other city have I been able to cross two continents (Asia and Europe) within 15 minutes and in my 15 years of living in the Middle East, Turkey was the very first Muslim country where I entered…See More

The art of shopping on Canal Street

Chinatown, New York City is one large mish-mash of peddlers pitching $10 watches,hole-in-the wall yummy dim sum spots and cases of dragonfruit for dirt-cheap spilling out on the sidewalks. After experiencing San Francisco, Montreal and Toronto's versions of Chinatown, shopping on Canal Street was an entirely different ballgame. Like any ethnic enclave in a metropolitan city, Chinatown helps maintain cultural insularity and acts as a commercial hub for all residents. But what makes NYC's…See More

Incredible India - A visit to the Motherland

Kerala:We arrived in hot, humid Cochin sans suitcases and were given 4 measly travel kits with oversized T-shirts and mens shaving cream. Fortunately, my cousins came to the rescue with the essentials. So the first two days, my sister went native wearing cotton salwars and kurtas! We shopped for saris, ate heavy Kerala parathas and super spicy fish curry, drank countless cups of tea and visited the required relatives on the list. Somehow this time, the visits felt like less of a penance and more…See More

Edinburgh: City of Books and Buildings

Edinburgh, Scotland Known as the Athens of the North for its immense literary scene and ancient Grecian style architecture, this is certainly one city oozing with culture. It previously enjoyed the additional nom de plume of city of banks, but with the sinking of RBS (its very own Scottish financial baby), that title has clearly been relinquished. On our very first day, my sister and I were delighted at the 10 second window of opportunity to see Prince Charles and his beloved Camilla in the…See More
