Sounds like a fantastic trip. Sometimes the best, most relaxing ones are relatively closet to home. My husband, toddler and I drove the PCH between Santa Monica and Santa Cruz last January and it was incredibly relaxing. I blogged in the evening…

I tend to tune in to my environment and turn off when traveling. A week gap in posting on my blog means I am busy traveling. I'd like to share, but generally I am too busy seeing new things and meeting people to sit on the computer editing my…

Travelling Unplugged

I’ve just returned from a week in Northern California. My husband, son and I spent a couple of days in Monterey followed by several more days in Healdsburg, on the Russian River. This was not a far-flung trip for us as both destinations can easily be reached in a day’s driving (although perhaps I should not call seven hours in a car with a toddler easy). However, it was a vacation that was much needed and we were all looking forward to a change of scenery. My husband and I both spend a lot of…See More

The Stairs of Positano

I went to Positano, on Italy’s stunning Amafi Coast, in 2003 to attend a wedding. This is one of my favorite photos from that trip. It’s no easy feat getting to Positano. After arriving in Rome, I took a train two hours south to Naples, then transferred to the Circumvesuviana, the local train that runs between Naples and Sorrento. This took about forty-five minutes. In Sorrento, you can catch a public bus or hire a taxi to take you over the hill and along tiny, winding roads clinging to the edge…See More

We're Not In Kansas Anymore

I grew up in Southern California, where earthquake drills were standard practice in elementary school and we never, ever hung anything over our beds. In case of an earthquake, I know what to do. Duck, cover and hold. Stay away from windows and tall furniture. Don’t run outside. Aside from a brief encounter with a blizzard while on a volunteer trip to North Carolina during college, earthquakes are the only severe weather with which I’ve had… Continue

Traveling Sick

I’m sick as a dog. It’s bad enough suffering through the coughing and sniffling in the comfort of my own home. When you’re traveling, getting sick presents a whole new set of challenges. Will you have access to medical care and medication if you need it? How much will it cost? Will you be able to effectively communicate the problem if you don’t speak the local language?

Falling ill or getting injured while on a trip is something you can’t entirely prepare for because you never know… Continue

5 Unusual American Hotels

You’ve stayed at all manner of chain hotels, with their lifeless business centers, uninspired restaurants and bland, generic rooms. 1. Wigwam… Continue
