Visiting the snow monkeys in Japan

One of the highlights of my one-month trip to Japan so far has been a visit to the snow monkeys near Nagano. What is so special about them?  Esoecially when it is cold and snowing, they like to hang out in their very own spa - a mineral water hot spring!  You can really see by their expression how much they enjoy being in the hot water.  They also groom each other for minutes at a time. Of course, I have taken lots of…See More

Copenhagen: the taming of Christiania Freetown

Walking through the famous“Freetown Christiania” on a wet November afternoon in Copenhagen wasanticlimatic.  Here we were in theself-declared autonomous neighborhoud that had caused such an uproar because itpronounced itself outside of the law in the early 70s, where canabis was andstill is freely available for sale, the epitomy of living in sin.  And what is my fist impression?  An art loving, free-living communitywhere mothers on tricycles (two wheels in front) push their children…See More

Do you like puffins? Visit Drangey Island in the north of Iceland

If ever there was a remote location, this is it: a blob of tuff-stone volcanic rock in a fjord in north Iceland, accessible only by fishing boat in the summer months. But truly a paradise for bird watchers and puffin lovers. See my story at http://travelswith.zen-aida.com/2010/09/destinations/iceland-drangey-island/ with lots of pictures… Continue

Glorious North Iceland!

Who would have thought that an urban cat such as I would love the "nothingness" of Iceland so much? But I did and thoroughly enjoyed an all too short seven days there. The botanical gardens in Akureyri, the shrimp painting in hommage to René Magritte, Iceland's oldest hotel where Marlene Dietrich slept, the natural hot pool where - legend has it - the outlaw Grettir enjoyed his swim... read more about it on my blog http://travelswith.zen-aida.com

Gosh Japan - wish I could join you! Friends of mine stayed at the Nakamuraya Ryokan an Sapporo. They actually liked it. Is there an ice festival right now? If you would like to write something about it - or any other unusual findings - for UTD, I'd be all game :)

Have a wonderful and safe trip!
