travel as medicine: how japan got me over a broken leg

I survived! No-one is more surprised than me....but let me explain. Japan, to say the least, was an impromptu trip. As of mid-January, I'd been on crutches for almost two and a half months, which had whittled my social life down to the movie nights, dinner parties and booze fests that I could host in my shoebox. Gone were the dinners out, the nights dancing, the days exploring Seoul. It was…See More

a jewel in the city: santa catalina monastery, arequipa, peru

I can be a real cheapskate sometimes. So when my travel buddy and I were in Arequipa, Peru, and she asked if I wanted to check out the Santa Catalina Monastery, I initially took a look at the entrance fee and scoffed. 35 soles (12$) to get in? I had better things to spend the money on - like dinner!Besides, just walking around a city is always free. And isn't that the most interesting kind of sightseeing? Whatever she said to convince me, however, I'm glad she did - Santa Catalina wound up…See More

treasures from the souk: my favourite moroccan finds

Just today, I was looking through my photographs from Morocco when I came across these pictures of my favourite souvenirs.Morocco is a shopper's paradise, to say the least - walking through the souks, there's a multitude of things to discover, so many strange new trinkets and crafts and antiques the likes of which you've never seen anywhere else. Big paper lanterns in greens and reds, damascene bracelets made of iron and filigreed silver, tiny painted tea cups and heavy silver teapots,…See More

an autumn storms reaches the temple

Just as evening chanting began, the storm rolled in. We could hear it outside – the wind barrelling through the trees, the thunder cracking in the distance, and the torrents of rain coming down over the roof. Somehow, we’d made it inside the main temple hall just as the height of the storm arrived.  The sounds reverberated around the temple grounds outside and brought back memories of a similarly massive storm this time last year in Seoul (streets turned into rivers and trees torn from…See More

learning to love the mall in manila

You might think you're a world traveller. You might think that you've seen other places, that you've experienced other cultures, but still, sometimes, your own sheer ignorance will surprise you. I didn't know much about Manila when I landed. I'd planned to immediately fly out again, but due to some scrambled bookings, was presented with a sudden 8 hour layover. I briefly weighed my options and decided I'd rather stick my luggage in an airport locker and explore the city than sit around the…See More

a day at the dog cafe (and no, you don't eat them)

It's an understatement to say that Seoul has a thriving café culture.I don't think I've ever encountered a city with quite so many cafés all over, in every nook and cranny, tiny unique one-shots outnumbering the big chains, places with hand-written menus and strange knick-knacks covering the walls. And I don't think I've ever encountered a city with such a variety of theme cafés: there are ones you can visit solely to play a mass of board games, to get your toes nibbled on by tiny flesh-eating…See More

the strangest place i've ever been

Sometimes travel takes you straight down the rabbit hole. Macau is an easy day trip from Hong Kong, but as soon as I had the opportunity to spend a few hours walking around, I sincerely wished I were staying for at least a few days. Why?Because it's the strangest place I've ever been.To understand exactly what makes this place so perplexing, I'll need to give a bit of backstory: Macau is the result of the combination of a strategic placement at the mouth of the Pearl River, a strong tradition as…See More
