Always the Outsider Inside Cuba

Maybe it's me, but certain zingers people have sent my way 10, even 25 years ago I just can't shake (note 1). There was the time in elementary school when the Mean Girl said: 'ever wonder why you have no friends?' I responded: 'I have friends you don't even know about.' Pretty clever in my 10-year old estimation, but she didn't miss a beat. 'That's because they're imaginary.' Ouch.

Then, some years later, a different Mean Girl (yeah, I was the one everyone loved to pummel -…

Here We Go - Our Mindful Mileage Run

We have a big travel plan. We're in the final stages of preparing for the mileage run that will renew our airlines "status" for another year AND take us to some incredible places. We are ready to roll in less than a month!

This is a lot more than a mileage run. Each destination on our itinerary is a place we really want to visit - a deliberate choice. Here's the scoop on where we're… Continue

Day 04: On to Sorrento

In this post, I continue my Viva Italia tour as we leave Rome and head south to Sorrento and the beautiful Amalfi Coast. Along the way, we get stuck at a truck stop, meet our third bus and driver, get car sickness, eat a meter of pizza and enjoy sex by the pool.

Guided bus tours are filled with those pleasant surprises and nasty realities. I still remember the first tour I took, standing in the Parc du Champs de Mars, staring up at the Eiffel Tower, my heart beating out La… Continue

HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY AND THE “ELEMENT” BEHIND BRANDING GREEN

A few years ago I was at the National Tour Association’s “Spring Meet” in Uncasville, Connecticut. Tour operators, suppliers, and destination management companies converged to discuss a number of industry issues. Hot then – and still hot now – is how to turn brands “green” (toward environmental sustainability), capture customer appreciation toward this, and reduce costs. That last bit was challenging in 2006; I remember one hotel sales executive saying that using bio-friendly washing…

The Ten Most-played Radio Songs Around the World

I've done The Road Trip in so many countries that to name them here would just be boasting. Um. Mexico, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Chile, Argentina, The UK, Portugal, Spain, France, The Czech Republic (OK, all of Europe), Turkey and Bali. I've braved the roads of Brazil, navigated the curves of New Zealand and high-tailed it from Tennessee to LA in three days. I know The Road and The Road knows me.

For the real Road Trippers, however, I'm but a novice. I know. I haven't driven through…

Travelling with Medical Needs

I am not your average backpacker who feels this need to live off the land. I don't go into the wilderness with a bag, a sleeping bag and two pairs of underwear. I tend to over pack, this is due to a constant nagging I was given having to do with my many medical conditions as a child. Don't do this, you'll hurt your this! Don't do this, you might die because of this! I have an increased chance of dying because of many of these things but I try not to let them hold me back or have them lessen my… Continue

Frankfurt to Istanbul: The people have spoken

It has been nearly two weeks since we were evacuated from Cairo and we have had plenty of time to formulate a plan about how to get to Istanbul from Frankfurt. A big thank you goes out to everyone who participated in our online survey. Your responses have been hugely helpful in transforming us from bewildered evacuees back into motivated travellers who know where they are going.

38 people answered our survey. People seem to think that after our tense Egyptian experience we should…

Photo Essay: Canals, Bicycles and Coffee Shops

ams5.jpg

This time three years ago, I had handed in my thesis and was on the road with two close friends of mine. On that thursday night, the idea came up to hit the road and so, with no set plan, we drove our way up to Amsterdam.

We drove for at least 6 hours, and only arrived in the dutch capital at about 1 or 2 am. Excited about our arrival, we parked the car and stepped out to take a first quick glimpse on the city…

Volunteering abroad and Relationships

“Distance doesn't matter if you really love the person, what matters most is your honesty and trust for that relationship to work out” - Trish. The second international holiday celebrated after New Year is Valentine’s Day.  History has it that Valentine’s Day came from St. Valentine a priest who lived around 270 AD in Rome and he attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II who ruled during this time. He believed that marriage made the men weak. So he issued an edict forbidding…

Valentine's Day in Amsterdam

With its endless canals and infamous Red Light District, Amsterdam is both romantic and raunchy, making it the perfect place to spend Valentine's Day.  Here are a few ways to enjoy Valentine's Day in Amsterdam, no matter where on the spectrum your proclivities LIE.

Hilton Hotel - Make love not war in this five star hotel where John Lennon and Yoko Ono honeymooned and simultaneously held their famous “Bed-In” to protest the Vietnam War. The suite is still available and still…

In search of the Blue Iguana

I walked along the path through the dry forest with my eyes constantly searching the rocks and bushes.  It was late afternoon and shadows were starting to obscure various possible hiding places.  I had walked at least a mile around the trail without seeing one.  I was beginning to feel disappointed. How could I walk so far and search so thoroughly but not see one?

Then I came around the bend of the trail back to the main part of the park.  There he was in the clearing, lounging in the…

Delta Air Lines and The Staples Center - Brand Synergy!

Yesterday a press release was issued about how Delta Air Lines has entered an agreement with AEG to become the official airline of the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, official airline of the L.A. Kings, official partner of The GRAMMY Museum at L.A. Live, and will have rights to marketing in the L.A. Live complex. Whew! That is quite a mouthful of information for a one press release! What I find most interesting, though, is the impact of branding a brand like Delta Air Lines and…
