Montreal and BYOW

Love food? Love wine? Then I’ve got good news: there’s no need for your cup (or wallet) to run dry while in Montréal.

That’s right, feel free to tote your favourite bottle with you to hundreds of Bring-Your-Own-Wine (BYOW) restaurants across the city.

It’s true that the BYOB concept can be found in other North American cities, but nowhere have I seen it as common as here in Montréal. Heck, we even have entire streets dedicated to the practice (Duluth and Prince Arthur… Continue

Did you know this? Florence what lovers do

Did you know this? The fences around the Cellini Monument are full of padlocks with indelible writings, hung up by lovers who believe that it is a symbol of an indissoluble relationship; the keys to these padlocks are then symbolically thrown into the Arno River, where nobody can ever retrieve them.
I'd like to be there, Florence Uffizi and Ponte Vecchio

Local Honey Tastes Best - Miele Buonissimo!

Driving down our road the other day we noticed our neighbor Walter (pronounced Valter), working with the bees so we had to stop!

He showed us the boxes, the bees & the "goods" - that golden sweet honey!

In a region filled with artisan honey filling every market, we choose to buy only the best & that just so happens to be from our neighbors! They only make enough for family, friends & the random passerby who would like a jar.

There are 2 sometimes 3… Continue

5 Unusual American Hotels

You’ve stayed at all manner of chain hotels, with their lifeless business centers, uninspired restaurants and bland, generic rooms. You’d love to break the cycle and check in someplace truly unusual and different. I told you recently about Stockholm’s Jumbo Hostel, a hostel located inside an actual 747 at Arlanda Airport. Is there anyplace this unique in the USA? Yes, siree, Bob! Here are some hotels, motels and assorted other lodgings that are way, way outside the box.

1. Wigwam… Continue

I thought I'd peel back the lid on our latest traveller program / promotion / love affair - Van-Tastic Adventures !

A Night Out On Jalan Alor

After getting settled in our hotel, we met up with our friend Sarah, who’d graciously agreed to act as our guide during our stay in Kuala Lumpur. In addition to driving us through the city’s crowded streets (it took us a while to adjust to the whole “driving on the left side” business - more than a few panicked shrieks rang out from the backseats as Sarah deftly navigated her way), Sarah was going to make sure that we sampled as much Malaysian food as possible.… Continue

Did you know this ? Brussels the greenest capital

Did you know this? The principal tourist attractions are Saint Micheal and Gudule’s Cathedral and Notre Dames du Sablon. Besides the many testimonies of Art Noveau, Brussels, with its hectares of forests and its town parks, is considered the greenest capital of the world.
I'd like to stay there - Belgium Brussels

Savvy Navigator Does the Southern Cross

Editor's Note: Fellow airline geek Dan Webb asked me to be a guest blogger on his Things in the Sky aviation blog. Here's my entry in its entirety. When the article was published last week, the Air France flight 447 accident had not yet occurred. Some readers might find this relevant as I made a similar trip in 2000, LGW-GIG, in which we experienced pretty extensive turbulence.

With Dan heading to foreign… Continue

Airline Uniforms (plus a chance to win free tickets on Olympia Airlines)

Just like Cliff Muskiet, the uniform freak, I have a thing for airline uniforms. I think most flight attendants do. In fact, inside my guestroom closet hangs three different uniform styles from two different airlines. I've saved it all - the pants, the skirts, the dresses, the jackets, the vests, the blouses, the wings, and even the blue tie I snapped around my neck and the epaulets I wore on both shoulders with the pleated Bermuda shorts and high… Continue

Biking Seattle's Sammamish River Trail

Seattle has long been considered one of the best cities in the country for bicyclists. It’s been on Bicycling Magazine’s list of Top 5 cycling cities for years. The city is crisscrossed with bike trails, drivers are generally respectful of bicyclists and the city of Seattle has plans to add another 450 miles of bike trails in the coming years. This is a city that makes bicycling to work an appealing alternative and cycling for fun a great, scenic pleasure.

I’ve done some biking in… Continue
