Girls Day Out: Market Forays in Santa Barbara

IMG_2551Market Forays.jpg My friends, Aya [a Vice President], Shirley [a business owner], and I [a meeting planner]  are constantly trying to get together.  It’s sad to admit that we just can’t get it together.  If left to our own devices, we’d probably see each other once a year. Maybe.  Thankfully we don’t have to rely upon ourselves since our Organizer, Aya’s husband, Miles,…

Food, Glorious Food...Around the World on a Budget 8.20.11

When you go on vacation you have to eat. It's not something you can just not do, like buying souvenirs. If you're anything like me, you greatly look forward to trying new foods and having people cook for you. The great thing about food is that, unlike airfare, it comes in a large range of prices, meaning you can save a bundle on your dining when you travel. I have ten awesome ways you can save even MORE, get to eat delicious foods and enjoy more of the culture of your…

Choosing a Volunteer Abroad Program

“It’s easy to make a buck; it’s a lot tougher to make a difference.” – Tom Brokaw. There are many volunteer opportunities out there for anyone interested in doing volunteer work, more so abroad. Where as some people go into the volunteer world for just the simple experience, some go towards it as a vocational calling, or as a stepping stone for their future careers. It is best to choose a volunteering program that will be most beneficial to you and to those that you intend to help. Here is a…

The Magic is in the Hole at Voodoo Doughnut 8.17.11

Family comes first here at Shereen Travels Cheap headquarters, which means that my whole weekend was full of family gatherings all centered around food and having a good time. I didn’t have time to devote to a brand new blog post, but I did have time to hit up Voodoo Doughnut in my hometown with a cousin and aunt. Since it has been called an international tourist attraction, I decided to…

Blue Gets a Bit More Junk in the Trunk

One of many test packings of the 4Runner Stuff. There is too much of it. How do you pack a car for 15 months of travel? We need room for camping gear, hiking gear, clothes, food, work equipment, the list goes on. And on. Jessica aka "The Stuff Nazi" is guardian of the packing list.

Our best bet is to be smart about using the space we have. This means making a few modifications to the rear cargo area to fit more gear.

We decided to build a folding shelf, nine inches off the floor with the intention of storing…

Happy Birthday to Shereen Travels Cheap! 8.13.11

Can you believe it’s already been a whole year since I started this site? I can’t, but then again when I started, I couldn’t imagine having enough to write about regarding budget travel for so long. The blog is super fun and I love to hear what others have to say about what I post and where they have been. In the last year I’ve completed a book, started a newsletter, gotten my blog published on Kindle, gone to some wonderful places, added too many…

Group Buying Power For Travel Savings 8.10.11

Anything that can help you travel more cheaply is a good thing in my opinion. An even better thing is something that can help, virtually, anyone save on trips. It’s rare that I find a website that works for just about everyone and also boasts a 50-90% savings on everything they offer, but I have found just that. It’s likely many of you have already found it, too, but didn’t realize how truly useful it is for traveling. I’m talking about…

Torstrasse, the new art and fashion mile of Berlin

Those of us who were here in the 1990’s remember Torstrasse as a dilapidated, run-down avenue dividing the historic district of Mitte from the then equally shabby residential district of Prenzlauer Berg.  Back then the taxi drivers still liked to refer to…

I Drove in Lima Peru and Survived

We drove into northern Lima in mid afternoon; chaos, confusion and traffic, worse than Cairo, greeted us. Yes, it is true driving in Lima is worse than driving in Cairo. Beaten up cars, trucks and buses compete for space and it seems the driver with the biggest bull bar wins. No one it seems uses indicators, indicators are for woosies, instead they hang their arms out the window and a flick of the wrist indicates they are about to change direction, it is anyone’s guess as to where, brakes are… Continue

Berlin and her airports

Berlin is a massive sprawling city so it is perhaps appropriate for it to have had more than one major airport.  When one looks back to the infamous Cold War blockade of Berlin in June of 1948 there were not enough runways in West Berlin for planes to land so during the Berlin Airlift the Allies were forced to get creative. In the French sector of northwest…

Early this year, we decided to – from time to time – highlight some of our most spectacular past journeys under an "Awesome Adventures" heading. To qualify, the journey has to be the best of the best. There aren't many.
