The "Villisca Ax Murder House"

I have wanted to go to Villisca, Iowa and visit what is called the Ax Murder House for several years. It is widely believed to still be haunted by the ghosts of the eight people that were killed there and on occasion a figure that is believed to be the murderer makes its presence known. Now I will get my chance to visit the site of the heinous murders that to this day remain unsolved.

A Little History of the Murders

Sometime after midnight on July 10, 1912,…

Help me fight poor treatment of writers!

Dear Clogs and Tulips Readers,

When I came to the Netherlands with no work permit and no Dutch language skills, I realized I'd have to be creative in finding ways to earn money. Not long after the residence permit was thrust into my eager little paws, I started my own company and, to make a little extra money on the side, I began freelancing as a writer.

As with all things, when you first start out, you make some stupid mistakes that you learn from and move on and they help… Continue

Choosing and Booking a Hotel When You Have a Disability

I attend a lot of disability events, and as soon as people find out that TravelinWheels provides information on hotel room accessibility they say, "Good!  Because, I asked such and such hotel if they had accessible rooms.  They told me yes, but ......"  Inevitably, it was something that didn't work for them.

It's one of the main reasons why I started TravelinWheels.  I did the same thing.  I was a trusting traveler who figured that if I asked for an accessible room, my worries about…

7 Months Around the World -- Getting Ready to Go

There are so many things to do to get ready for a 7-month trip around the world.  Starting with saving up $30,000, for instance.

After 2 1/2 years of saving -- along with some of the proceeds from my book, Planet Backpacker -- i'm starting to see my 30 grand dwindle rapidly with the advance purchase of plane tickets (to and from Tasmania, to Bali from Darwin, etc.), advance fees ($450 to hike Tasmania's Overland Track),…

Last Modifications to Blue

Roof rack with Life Remotely sticker. Wrapping up loose ends. That's been our story for the past month. The list on the wall seems to grow every day. I cross something off and Jessica adds four new things for us to do. It's a to-do list, in wallpaper form.

A couple weeks ago Kobus and I got around to putting the finishing touches on Blue. We found a place for the wireless router and 3G dongle, added a power adapter to our inverter, mounted a fire extinguisher, ran a USB plug to the back seat, and installed the new… Continue

Seminyak - the place to unwind yourself completely

Located at the famous Western stretch of Bali, Seminyak was the choice of our first 2 days there. Compared to Kuta, Seminyak is the upmarket and quieter counterpart. Indeed, the atmosphere is much more sophisticated and laid-back than other parts of Bali. Though the sands of Seminyak beach aren't the best I've felt (white sands of Redang still tops my list), the area is an amazingly refreshing place to… Continue

Kauai Coconut Festival

This past weekend marked the 15th anniversary of one of the great things to do in Kauai Hawaii. The Coconut Festival is held each year in the charming town of Kapa'a to celebrate all things coconut. Hosted by the Kapa'a business community it has become the premier Fall happening on the Kauai festival calendar. This two day event highlights one of the most important plant species in the world that touches almost everyone's life on the planet.

Started by the effervescent Bob Bartolo, a…

10 Ways to Stretch Your Budget in Honolulu 10.5.11

Last week I was off to Oahu in Hawaii and we stayed in the Waikiki area. While we saved quite a bit on airfare, our lodgings and even our activities (by using Groupon), there were things that we still had to pay for that could be quite spendy. We planned out some meals (using Groupon for a few) and then winged it the rest of the time. We…

Live and Learn: Paris 9.28.11

It's called the City of Lights and also The Most Romantic City in the World. I'm talking about Paris. While these things can certainly be true, there is also much to be learned in the city, which is not always romantic or bright. Regardless, the city is an amazing one to visit and experience culture. We only had three days there, but we still ended up learning quite a few things …

Hawaii: A Lesson in (Carry-on) Packing 9.24.11

I’ve been making my packing list and perfecting my techniques and while I talk a lot about how to pack and shove everything into a carry-on-size bag, I am well aware that a picture is worth a thousand words. That said, I decided to make a photo guide for you showcasing my actual packing and everything I take with me. Keep in mind that I am packing for two, so packing for one should be even easier if you travel alone, go with friends or you just want your own bag. I find that putting…

Corn is so a-MAZE-ing 9.21.11

Fall is totally my time to be outside. I guess because there are so many things going on that I want to do and the weather is nice, even if I have to wear a coat for them. After going to the farmer’s market and thinking about going veggie and fruit picking again, I was reminded of one of my favorite fun and frugal fall activities that you can do almost anywhere you go that has open land. That…

Getting Pampered on Your Travels 9.17.11

Okay, so I don’t often suggest doing things like getting massages and facials on vacation, because they can be expensive and also because you’re already “away from it all” and are probably more relaxed than you’ve been since your last trip. Plus, I can always think of other ways to spend that money while I’m away. Of course, traveling should be all about you and if it’s your only time to get pampered in any sense of the word, then I say go for it if…

Q Restaurant in Boston

The other night I had a great dinner at Q Restaurant in Boston's Chinatown.  I really recommend this place, everything was delicious, the place is very clean and the staff is very accommodating accommodating.

The food runs the gamut from Chinese cuisine to Sushi to Mongolian Hot Pot.  I had a sushi dish they call Snow Mountain which was excellent.  There was 8 pieces of sushi topped with fresh crabmeat, chopped vegetables and a delicate sweet sauce lightly drizzled over it.  Really…

Matjesfontein – A Pearl In The Cape Town Karoo Desert

A trip to South Africa would not be the same without a Cape Town tour to see the historic village of Matjiesfontein.  It’s about two and a half hours from the city and on the way you will see stunning scenery and views.

To visit glorious Matjiesfontein you will need a whole day to enjoy and…

Chiang Mai Nigt Market

We chose Same Same Guesthouse for our accommodation here in Chiang Mai because it was near to the famous old city walls of Thapae District. Being at the heart of the city, the shopping malls and the night markets were mere walking distance. And the words “night market” definitely rings a bell.

So by…

Miami, Key West and Travelers

I would love to welcome you all to Miami!

Miami is a melting pot of cultures, really. Many cities are described the same way but how many holds the record of being the city number one in the world in terms of the percentage of residents born outside the country?

Miami hosts some 12 million overnight visitors every year, many of them are on their way to a Caribbean cruise or somewhere else. In my opinion one should spend at least few days in the city to see what it´s all about.…
