For more than a century, visitors to one New York's most charming and famous state parks, Watkins Glen, have entered this marvelous little canyon via the "Entrance Tunnel," which climbs and bends 90 degrees to allow you to cross above Entrance Cascade on stone Sentry Bridge. The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York is famous for, among other things, its multitude of waterfalls. And the waterfalls become even more amazing, if not appealing, when storms cause floods to roar through the gorges. Tropical Storm Lee last September was the biggest such event in the past year. We will wait and see what nature brings us this year!

The long cascade of Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, NY is fun to look at from a number of angles. For more than ten thousand years, Buttermilk Creek has been splashing down the steep east slope of Inlet Valley, just a few miles from the south end of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the eleven Finger Lakes. Over the millennia, the creek has polished out a charming gorge that ends in the long, frothing falls.

Wrong!



There are actually two or three taller cataracts across the Empire State, including 215-feet-high Taughannock Falls near Ithaca in the beautiful Finger Lakes region. Taughannock plunges into a canyon on the west shore of 38-mile-long Cayuga Lake.
