Review: Millenium Hilton New York

There are few hotels in the United States with a more emotional history than New York’s Millenium Hilton.  At 55 Church, it sits literally across the street from the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.  During a recent stay I struck up a conversation with one of the staff who runs the business center.  She was working in the hotel on September 11th, and more than ten years later the trauma of that day was still evident in her face while she spoke about it.  The hotel sustained…

Tunnel into Watkins Glen!

For more than a century, visitors to one New York's most charming and famous state parks, Watkins Glen, have entered this marvelous little canyon via the "Entrance Tunnel," which climbs and bends 90 degrees to allow you to cross above Entrance Cascade on stone Sentry Bridge. See how this has changed since the 1800s at http://ithacafingerlakes.com/2012/04/01/tunnel-into-watkins-glen/

Buttermilk Falls During Flood

The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York is famous for, among other things, its multitude of waterfalls. And the waterfalls become even more amazing, if not appealing, when storms cause floods to roar through the gorges. Tropical Storm Lee last September was the biggest such event in the past year. We will wait and see what nature brings us this year!

Here is Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca during Tropical Storm Lee. See more images from the area at my blog,…

Buttermilk Falls from on High

The long cascade of Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, NY is fun to look at from a number of angles. For more than ten thousand years, Buttermilk Creek has been splashing down the steep east slope of Inlet Valley, just a few miles from the south end of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the eleven Finger Lakes. Over the millennia, the creek has polished out a charming gorge that ends in the long, frothing falls.

Check out my latest post on my blog, with seven large photos of Buttermilk Falls as…

Waterfalls in the Woods!

When you put the thoughts, "New York," and "waterfalls" together, what do you usually get? Niagara Falls, right? Well Niagara is truly grand, but there are many other great waterfalls in New York State, especially in the Finger Lakes region. In my latest post on my blog, "The Finger Lakes, Gorges, and Waterfalls," I feature one of these amazing cascades. Here's an excerpt.

"With the mild weather this winter, there is little ice and snow on the waterfalls, though there is still ice on… Continue

New York City Accessibility Leaves Something to Be Desired

As a kid, I watched movies and television shows that highlighted the magic of New York City.  The romance of places like The Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, Times Square, and Central Park have been forever etched in my memory.    There is always something to do; dining, sports, shopping, Broadway Theater, music, or just walking the city streets for some of the best people-watching anywhere.  Then, there is the legacy of the attacks of the World Trade Center which have forever…

We tried not to gawk. Seriously. But this town was simply incredible. At this point, we had already seen a guy with a boa constrictor draped over him and had posed with Bumblebee.

Yes, we are THOSE tourists. But please. We had never been to Vegas. This was all new and crazy and fascinating to us. It…

36 Hours in Seoul

I love the New York Times' "36 Hours in [city]" series - it's informative, interesting, and gives someone unfamiliar with the area a general idea about what to see or do. With their recent article about Seoul, I found myself agreeing with a couple parts - and disagreeing with others. My only criticism is that their itineraries are... well,…
