The 10 Most Important Lessons I’ve Learned from 6 Years, 7 Months and 11 Days of Travel Blogging

I’ve been pulling the levers and switches behind the scenes at Vagabondish.com for more than six and a half years. Today – May 21, 2013 – marks my 2,418th day of travel blogging.

I’ve made a lot of mistakes in that time. Like, a lot. (Bah … this Twitter thing’ll never catch on!) But thankfully it’s taught me a lot too. While I can’t tell you everything I’ve learned (because I’ve forgotten much of it), here are the ten most important things I think every travel…

Best Travel Blog Posts - New column on 101 Holidays

Have you ever seen a photograph on a travel blog that took your breath away, read a post that changed your opinion of a destination and left you desperate to go there or found a travel tip that made you wonder how you managed to get by without it? I certainly have.

Next month I’ll be starting a new series on the award-winning website…

TBEX in Prague is a No ... But London is a Go

Well some things just weren't meant to work out... Sadly, I just had to make the tough decision to cancel having a TBEX Europe event in Prague this year.

But there is good news!

We're still working on details as to date and time, but we'll have a mini TBEX Europe half-day event during the week of…

Douglas Coupland's Vancouver: A City of Glass (and Promise)

As a blogger, wanna-be storyteller, social media neophyte d-bag, I find it hard to fathom any one of our ilk not having read Douglas Coupland’s work. His seminal Generation X (and popularization of said term) speaks to our collective post-Reagan need to connect, to…

TBEX Europe

Wow. Just wow. I wish that I could capture the essence of TBEX Europe but I know I can't. For me it was about an incredible audience, intelligent speakers, considerate and gracious sponsors and so much more. But I know that you all have your stories to tell. Here are a few that I've seen...

Field of Dreams

I don't buy or sell e-books about search engine optimization or how to make millions off your travel blog. I've taken a few ideas from fellow bloggers, like finally making the switch from Blogger to Wordpress. I've been told about Google Analytics and Alerts and learned how to use them successfully. I don't claim to be the expert on any given destination. I'm doing travel blogging my own way. I am of the Field of Dreams belief: if you build it, they will come. If I write thoughtful and idea… Continue

So what does the travel blogging industry look like anyway?

It's a good question. There has been talk about whether this community of like minds (not the TBEX community per se but the community at large) or an actual profession or an emerging trend that will someday become an industry.

I know that I personally would like to know. As a marketing professional new to the industry, I not only deal with travel and public relations professionals, but community managers, hospitality professionals, marketing reps and lots more. Where does the… Continue

NatGeo adventure goes down :(

I was gutted to see NatGeo fold their Adventure magazine today. It was my favourite in the franchise. For general information, I've included the editorial snippit just posted to the Indie Travel Podcast newsletter subscribers:

Will travel writing become just a hobby?

It was sad to see National Geographic Adventure announce their impending closure today. It appears they've fired the entire team but the magazine will continue online ... Not sure how they're going to do… Continue

Los Roques, “Life on the Rocks!”

The crew of Hop and Jaunt enjoying the beach.

Our next destination, as we headed west, was the small archipelago of Los Roques or "The Rocks". It is a group of islands that sit very low in the Caribbean Sea north of the coast of Venezuela and eastward of the reknowned ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, & Curacao). The islands are surrounded by shallows of reefs and is kept as a Venezuelan National Marine Park. It is reputed to be one of the best… Continue

Why I Started Blogging

For years, I’ve always had an interest in preserving my travel memories. Traveled in college, after college, got married, traveled some more, had a child and traveling even more and more always hoping some day that we will live abroad, maintaining simpler lives, allowing us to see more of the world. In fact, after our 3 month trip this past summer, we have decided to relocate to Thailand in 2010. My dream is coming true. I have so many blog topics and ideas. I feel like my head is about to… Continue

Travelling Unplugged

I’ve just returned from a week in Northern California. My husband, son and I spent a couple of days in Monterey followed by several more days in Healdsburg, on the Russian River. This was not a far-flung trip for us as both destinations can easily be reached in a day’s driving (although perhaps I should not call seven hours in a car with a toddler easy). However, it was a vacation that was much needed and we were all looking forward to a change of… Continue
