Epic Kauai Hikes
The stars were aligned in perfect formation for me when The Kauai Adventure Club announced a hike beyond Mahaulepu Beach to Kipu Kai. Of all the epic Kauai hikes, this is a trek beyond the well traveled scenic south shore trail and it was held on a week day when most responsible people are working. The Kauai Adventure Club is a group of residents who have an affinity for hiking and Aloha and the members today ranged from 13 to 60…

Buttermilk Falls from on High
The long cascade of Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, NY is fun to look at from a number of angles. For more than ten thousand years, Buttermilk Creek has been splashing down the steep east slope of Inlet Valley, just a few miles from the south end of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the eleven Finger Lakes. Over the millennia, the creek has polished out a charming gorge that ends in the long, frothing falls.
Check out my latest post on my blog, with seven large photos of Buttermilk Falls as…

Hiking the Ho'opi'i Trail in Kauai
Hiking in Kauai is one of the best things to do of all the great activities that are available to the visitor here on the island. If you are here on a romantic honeymoon or simply a Hawaiian getaway you will be seeing the best of Kauai. Experiencing the road less traveled, the aura, romance, and mystique of hidden Kauai still energizes us even after 30 years. Somehow the air is different, the manner in which the light filters through the ancient Kukui trees, playing off…

Are Those My Ears On Fire?
I have been spoiled. While on a nearly one month exploration of Turkey I discovered the art of Grooming. No, not some mundane ritual of scraping my face each morning half asleep and caffeine deprived. But the time honored art practiced by Turkish barbers.
Recently I found myself in the small town of Kirazli, a farming community approximately 45 minutes from Ephesus. Known for their wonderful cherry and apricots, their slightly alkaline soils and abundance of water make their fruit…

Top Hikes to Find the Best Foliage
I am familiar with the ‘leaf peepers’ that flock to New England during a short 3-weeks in the Fall, spanning from about mid-September to the second weekend of October. These tourists usually check out the
flora from behind the windows of their tour bus off of the side…

Mud, pain and deer on the Appalachian Trail
Some people devote their lives to hiking the Appalachian Trail. They hike a little bit at a time, taking years to finish. The trail runs from Maine to Georgia. That's a whole lot of the U.S. to cover (about 2,178 miles to be exact). I used to think it had some historical significance, like it was a trail used by Native Americans or early pioneers. But…
