In Love with Ubud

Ask the locals what they think about Ubud, many of them would tell you that they love it. And so did we upon our first day there. Ubud is an area located in Central Bali, the hub for Balinese arts, culture and rice paddies. Compared to the oversubscribed beaches, Ubud is a cultural paradise situated amidst lush paddy fields.

Enjoying views of the rice paddies is therefore a must in Ubud. The best way would be to spend a night at an accomodation situated right beside…

Destination Malaysia: Onset of a New Chapter

With excitement and trepidation, I am due to start a new chapter in my life; one that is coincidentally yet closely related to my love of food and travel. Change is a part of everyday life, yet it is for us to decipher the good from the bad and have the ability to adapt ourselves to each new door that opens up. I, for one, welcome this change with open arms.

Nestled between the pristine waters of the South China Sea and the Strait of Malacca lies the multicultural Malaysia. Known for…

The One That Got Away

Destinations are like lovers—ask any seasoned traveler and I’m sure they’d agree. When you first arrive in a new place, you feel that initial rush of wild excitement in the same way you do when you meet someone new. And like any introduction, although you’re uncertain how it will all turn out, the air still crackles with the electricity of potential.

Over the next few days or weeks, you try to get a feel for each other. What’s he like? What are his passions?  As you…

Nice Extras during trip to Egypt!

I was fortunate enough to visit Egypt on a two week vacation! I expected tours of the temples to view the hieroglyphics and visits to the museums. However, there were a few extra added bonuses during my tours which I did not expect. They made for a very nice experience and amazing memories! I will take you back on my journey in the following sentences.

One adventure that really stands out among the rest is my visit to the Grand Pyramids of Giza! Of course, you expect to see the Sphinx… Continue

Hello from Cape Town

After a long but comfortable flight from LAX via London, we arrived in South Africa. After we quickly settled in to our 'Backpacker's' guest house in the area known as Seapoint, we put on our walking shoes and took a scenic hour's walk towards Camp's Bay. The wild coast of Cape Town is a wonderland of spectacular vistas.

... And then some things never change in Dubai

1. Everyone still works with landmarks

(Copright: MRandin)

In the 1980s, Dubai was the epitome of the U2 hit, “Where the streets have no name”. Instead, directions were given using landmarks, which were sometimes as vague as “turn right at the first set of pink buildings and then left at the one with the blue balcony railings”.

Night Market Madness at Batu Ferringhi

After a quick nap and a hot shower (both well deserved), we hit the town in search for some trinkets and whatsits at Batu Ferringhi’s huge night market.

What used to be a calm sidewalk by day, transforms into a frenzy of activity, full of shoppers trying to strike a deal. The bright fluorescent lights of each table and crazy neon colors of trishaws passing by reminded me of a Eastern influenced Las Vegas. It was… Continue

The Expat Divide

Expatriatism is often a life apart. So how does a writer abroad get up to speed and compete in her home market?

Here's my answer in a guest post -- about the fortuitous intersection of expatriatism, epublishing and digital citizenship -- at former Writers Digest editor Maria Schneider's Editor Unleashed blog.

Langkawi, Satay and Heavy Metal: Together at Last!

…Uh, which way is the beach? Considering the relatively small size of Lankawi, you wouldn’t think that getting lost on the way to something as big as the beach was possible. But for the heroes of the Malaysia.com team, nothing is impossible. After a few wrong turns, we were well off the beaten path and found ourselves cruising through a tiny village. When we pulled over to get our bearings, we found ourselves at the edge of an enticing looking neighbourhood market that was just getting… Continue

FRESH TAKE ON LOCAL FLAVOURS AT MARCHÉ JEAN-TALON

When I go to a new city, the first thing I look for are the local farmer’s markets. They’re places where you can feel the pulse of the city and so they make for a great first destination. This is where life tastes the sweetest and I am always excited to partake.

Located in the heart of Little Italy, the Jean-Talon market has been the city’s biggest – and best – culinary destination for decades. Foodies go there in search of perfect mushrooms and rare spices, while others come to take… Continue
