Why don't Americans protest?

Today in Laredo (TX) as we drove home after a yummy meal of empanadas, warm sushi and soup at Posh Express, Mom complained about the rising gas prices and the state of the economy. She claimed that we are pretty much in a depression, but the media is not allowed to utter this word so people won’t panic. And I agreed.
