Ithaca Falls Roar with the Thaw

Late December snows gave way to a stretch of unusually mild weather in January in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The result? Roaring waterfalls, none more spectacular than 150-foot-high Ithaca Falls! See my 90-second video of this dramatic cataract from above, the sides, and from above at http://ning.it/Vw0wE0.

Tux the Cat visits Rasta Cat in Jamaica!

Tux the Cat gets around and he has a passion for Reggae. See Rasta Cat's lyrics for "I Sprayed the Sheriff" and other feline adaptations of Reggae greats. Tux writes,

"To indulge my love of Reggae, I jetted to Jamaica to go to a Rasta Cat concert. He’s the most famous Reggae cat on the island and evokes Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff with his music. I once went to a Jimmy Cliff concert in Ithaca—it was so amazing that I thought I had gone to cat heaven. Sadly, I never got to hear Bob Marley in… Continue

Scaling those Cliffs!

Held by rappelling ropes by staff at the top of the cliff, state park "scaler" Jason props himself perpendicular to the cliff to reach loose rock at Watkins Glen State Park.

Before some gorge trails in the Finger Lakes region in upstate New York can be opened to…

Tunnel into Watkins Glen!

For more than a century, visitors to one New York's most charming and famous state parks, Watkins Glen, have entered this marvelous little canyon via the "Entrance Tunnel," which climbs and bends 90 degrees to allow you to cross above Entrance Cascade on stone Sentry Bridge. See how this has changed since the 1800s at http://ithacafingerlakes.com/2012/04/01/tunnel-into-watkins-glen/

Buttermilk Falls During Flood

The Finger Lakes region of upstate New York is famous for, among other things, its multitude of waterfalls. And the waterfalls become even more amazing, if not appealing, when storms cause floods to roar through the gorges. Tropical Storm Lee last September was the biggest such event in the past year. We will wait and see what nature brings us this year!

Here is Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca during Tropical Storm Lee. See more images from the area at my blog,…

Buttermilk Falls from on High

The long cascade of Buttermilk Falls in Ithaca, NY is fun to look at from a number of angles. For more than ten thousand years, Buttermilk Creek has been splashing down the steep east slope of Inlet Valley, just a few miles from the south end of Cayuga Lake, the longest of the eleven Finger Lakes. Over the millennia, the creek has polished out a charming gorge that ends in the long, frothing falls.

Check out my latest post on my blog, with seven large photos of Buttermilk Falls as…

Cornell Dragon Day

One of the oldest annual traditions at this Ivy League university is "Dragon Day." Cornell Dragon Day is a tradition more than a century old, taking place near St. Patrick's Day and at the beginning of spring break. Friday's 100 hundred foot dragon made it one of the best! See it all in this 6-3/4 minute video on our blog. http://ithacafingerlakes.com/2012/03/17/cornell-dragon-day/

Waterfalls from the Air

What's the tallest waterfall in New York State? Niagara, right?

Wrong!

There are actually two or three taller cataracts across the Empire State, including 215-feet-high Taughannock Falls near Ithaca in the beautiful Finger Lakes region. Taughannock plunges into a canyon on the west shore of 38-mile-long Cayuga Lake.

In my latest blog post (on my blog, "The Finger Lakes, Gorges, and Waterfalls,"  … Continue

Watkins Glen State Park in 90 Seconds!

One of New York's oldest and most famous state parks is Watkins Glen at the south end of 35-mile-long Seneca Lake, deepest of the eleven Finger Lakes. Watkins Glen is one of the most beautiful and charming places you can go for a walk! I made this short video last year capturing the essence of this singular attraction. It only takes a minute and a half. Enjoy!

Waterfalls in the Woods!

When you put the thoughts, "New York," and "waterfalls" together, what do you usually get? Niagara Falls, right? Well Niagara is truly grand, but there are many other great waterfalls in New York State, especially in the Finger Lakes region. In my latest post on my blog, "The Finger Lakes, Gorges, and Waterfalls," I feature one of these amazing cascades. Here's an excerpt.

"With the mild weather this winter, there is little ice and snow on the waterfalls, though there is still ice on… Continue

Watkins Glen in the Finger Lakes

On my personal blog, http://ithacafingerlakes.com, I show and tell wonders of the beautiful  Finger Lakes region of New York State, a region usually missed by first-time travelers to the state, who typically will see New York City and then scoot to Niagara Falls. There is so much incredible country in between. See my latest post about Watkins Glen State Park, the oldest state park in the region, comparing two photographs of a gorge scene from…
