10 smart travel tips from women travelers

When it comes to preparing for a trip, flight attendants are experts. We travel light with just a rollaboard and a tote bag. Rolling instead of folding leaves clothes wrinkle free. Outfits are coordinated around footwear; a comfy kick-around pair for exploring the city by day and something dressy for dinner and a show at night. Undies, socks and bikinis, whatever can be wadded up, are housed inside shoes. No space goes unused. To make things simple, pack black and be done with it.…

How to get through airport security quickly!

With Thanksgiving fast approaching and Hanukkah, Christmas, and New Year's following right behind it, more people than ever will be flying in the upcoming weeks. That means only one thing. Holiday travelers will soon be taking over the airports. It won't be pretty. Long lines will form at security, the kind made even longer by passengers who have yet to master the techniques needed to pass through airport security swiftly and smoothly. That's why it's… Continue

A memorable flight for a first time flier

I knew something was up when an attractive woman wearing a fur vest walked to the back of the airplane during boarding and pulled my coworker aside on a flight from Dallas to New York. I couldn't really make out what they were saying as I set up the galley, shoving snacks in a drawer and stacking cups in an insert, but it had something to do with a kid who had spent his entire summer babysitting while his friends went on vacation. The woman, it turned… Continue

How to create a flight attendant costume

It’s that time of year, people! Hopefully you’ve already figured out what you’re going to be for Halloween. It is right around the corner, ya know.

I’m the type of person who usually waits until the last second to pull something together, which is why I almost always end up feeling insecure about my costume, a crap costume, which only leads to a miserable night out – that is if I even go out! It all depends on just how crappy the crap… Continue

Flight attendants under investigation for bomb threat

Like I mentioned in my last post, Fly-Girls, a flight attendant docu-series airing soon, it's rarely ever a good thing when flight attendants are in the news...

It happened a few seconds after the Captain on my flight from Miami to New York introduced himself and then asked if I had brewed a pot of coffee. I had, in fact. I always do whenever I'm working the galley. I poured him a cup and told him my name as we boarded a full flight on a… Continue

Fly Girls, a flight attendant docu-series

The first thing I thought when I heard about the new flight attendant show called Fly Girls was, why didn't they ask me! Not that I really want to be on a reality show. It's just...well...it would have been kind of nice to have been asked.

The second thing I thought was, I wonder if any of the "fly girls" are guys? Because guys do fly, and that Virgin America flight attendant over there, the one donning the inflatable yellow… Continue

Interview with New York Time's best selling author Allison Winn Scotch

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book I couldn’t put down. In fact, your book, Time of my Life, made me wish my commuter flight from New York to Los Angeles would never end. It’s that good! With heavy issues like abandonment, divorce, escape and fate, what inspired you to write the book?

Well, I’d been contemplating doing a time-travel story, but I wasn’t quite sure how to go about it. I mentioned it to my agent, and I… Continue

SEATTLE - it's all about kids, trains & food!

THE TRIP:

•DAY 1: New York - Seattle

•DAY 2: /

•DAY 3: Seattle - New York

As soon as I saw that long Seattle layover on the bid sheet, I knew I had to have it. I can't even remember the last time I had a whole day anywhere, let alone a layover with enough time to eat, sleep AND shower! This layover, I knew, would be like the good old days when flying was fun, which is why, I'm sure, several of my colleagues laughed when… Continue

A question about flight attendant training schools

Dear Heather,

Could you please tell me which course of action I should take to become a flight attendant. Should I take a college training program that offers a diploma, or should I go to a airline and go through their training program? I have read a lot concerning flight attendants today and I don't know what to believe when it comes to the training procedures. Thank you for your time and hope to meet you one day,

Maggie from Kamloops bc

20 ways to use a maxi pad in flight

Before I share the list - 20 ways to use a maxi-pad in flight, as well as a video created to go along with the list, I first must explain how this post even came to be. I don't want you to think I spend my time sitting around thinking about maxi pads. Trust me, there's a method to the madness.

So there I sat at La Guardia airport in New York inside flight service operations, relaxing in a beat up, reclining chair, not watching the weather… Continue

A letter from a frequent flyin', two-timin' cheat!

Dear Airline,

I remember the first day we met. It was love at first flight. We've shared countless hours together- oh the places we've gone. It's been bumpy at times, but I always stuck up for you when people called you old and grumpy. I even stuck by you when you dropped service to Providence, my home town! But lately something has changed. You don't treat me the way you used to. You started charging me for every little thing, even the…

Frequent flier pet peeve - rude flight attendants!

So heather. Tell me your opinion on this. Today I flew home from visiting my bubby in Boca and I was reminded of one of my biggest flight attendant pet peeves. The flight attendant working in first class, while addressing passengers to take drink orders and when checking in during the flight, asked.."what do you need" ? A call light would ring, she'd saunter out of the galley and bark, "what do you need"? I dunno why, but this bothers me. I think… Continue

Mile High Club

There's a question I'm always asked whenever someone finds out I'm a flight attendant, a question that never ceases to amaze and simultaneously makes me cringe regardless of how often I hear it, a question about you guessed it - the mile high club.

"So...have you ever caught anyone joining the mile high club?" If it's a single person doing the asking the question is usually direct and to the point, a just-the-facts-Ma'am kind of question,… Continue

The husband writes (again)...

This hotel I’m staying in is a lot like the one I got stuck in during Katrina. Someone broke into my room this morning and went through my bag, but all they saw were really smelly outfits and a few Harley shirts. I didn’t even bother telling the owners downstairs as they were the ones who probably did it. I just turned down my bed and I think Ill sleep in my clothes tonight. The window has an electric shutter so people can’t crawl into the room. I am going to put some furniture by the door… Continue

Nonrevs, Deadheads, & Commuters in (and out) of uniform

Wanna know the best way to change clothes on an airplane? I bet you do. I'll get to that in a moment. (Or you can just scroll down to the bottom of this post.) Now that I've got your attention...

Have you ever seen a uniformed crew member sitting on the jumpseat and flipping through magazines? Or even worse, watching a movie? Don't be too quick to judge. There's a very good chance that lazy flight attendant is a nonrev passenger, not a… Continue

The husband writes...

Heather,

I am on the airplane and sitting next to the girl from Destiny’s Child. I’m leaving you and having her baby. She is really pretty and super nice even though I had no idea who she was until the male flight attendant came over and started drooling for a picture. I’m jealous. Usually male flight attendants drool over me – not a pretty girl. Call you when I land.

A weekend in Chicago - talking about blogging & a quick trip report

It's been a few years since I've had a nice long layover in downtown Chicago, so I'd forgotten what a truly wonderful city it is. You see, whenever I'm visiting the Windy City my crew and I usually get stuck at an airport hotel, if we even leave the airport at all. So when I got an invitation to speak at the travel blog exchange conference, I decided to make it a long weekend. I also decided to bring my mother along.

Our flight from New… Continue

Dear Grant,

Blogging tip #1: Post pictures! Lots of them.

Add AT LEAST one photo to every blog post. Of… Continue

Attention Sharon Stone, GIVE ME THE BAG!

Perhaps you've been on an airplane and heard the following PA, "Ladies and gentleman, all the overhead bins are full, so if you've brought on board a bag that does not completely fit underneath the seat in front of you, please bring it to the front of the aircraft to be checked."

Here's the thing about that little PA, there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it, the bag will be checked - even if you're a celebrity. That includes you, Sharon… Continue
