Each year people from around the world tune in to watch The Iditarod Sled Dog Race, which is also known as the Last Great Race on Earth! As a life long Alaskan mushing has been all around me in one form or another... and heck I used to deliver the Anchorage Times with my dog hitched to a sled.
If you ever have a chance in your life to witness this race, do it! The ceremonial start takes place downtown Anchorage a day before the official start, which takes place in Willow Alaska. I also encourage anyone to go beyond just the starting of this event and head up the trail to any check point - because it's out there that you're incredibly moved by the spirit of this race.
Accommodations up the trail vary from village or remote lodges, to sleeping on a school gym floor. I've experienced each and even welcomed into a locals home. It's an experience you'll never forget, and a real taste of Alaska that would be unequivocal. The options are many, very accessible, and even better affordable.. I really could go on and on here! Feel free to contact me for ideas and advice - I'd be happy to help.
Here's some video from this year's race, which includes some from downtown and the official restart. There's enough depth and drama around the race, so I decided to have some fun and tried to capture the other end of the spectrum - people, dogs, and festivities!
This is just another reason why Alaska in the Winter is just as fun, especially this time of the year!
Enjoy!

Kim -
Iditarod is a lot of fun, and a week before that is Fur Rondy and annual winter event - Iditarod is really the main event to see though! Appreciate the production feedback on the editing and shooting as well. Events are a little less intensive and fun when it comes to shooting and editing...
