Most, if not all, solo travelers are aware that cooking for yourself can save a sizeable chunk of change. However, when you’re not
used to creative cooking, and staying in a hostel where kitchen supplies
may be limited (at best); you may find yourself in a granola bar, ramen
noodle and peanut butter sandwich rut. Hostel cooking doesn’t have to
be scary and good food doesn’t have to be entirely sacrificed to eat on
the cheap. In this entry I’ll introduce you to the wonderful difference a
box of brown quick cook rice can make.
Notes:
Most hostels I have stayed in had at least a stove, saucepan and
refrigerator which is basically all you will need. When I travel I carry
my own utensils I
also “steal” sugar packets from cafes after I’ve got my coffee (you will
need at least one). It is usually less expensive to purchase items like
cheese at a deli counter especially when you only need a small amount.
