Its not easy being green... Join me for Green Week, next week!

It was July 22, 1969 when the Cuyahoga River on the southern shores of Lake Erie caught fire due to oils, chemicals and other materials leaking into the waters. As you can imagine, it created national media
frenzy.

Due to the fire on Cuyahoga River and other unthinkable environmental events, Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson started planning an environmental teach-in known as Earth
Day
. Fast-forward 40 years, and here we are, 2010 and still trying
to get everyone on-board.

Although there are some great initiatives out there, we need more. But this post is not meant to be a Global rant.

For the last month or so, I’ve been thinking of what I can do today to celebrate Earth Day. I’m of the mindset that Earth Day should be an everyday thing, not just once a year. However baby steps are sometimes
important and Earth Day is a great jumping off point to living a greener
life.

As a Children Book Manager and a citizen of the world, I feel it’s important to not only adjust my own lifestyle, but to help teach children more about the environment as well. For this reason, I’ve
decided to dedicate next week as Green Week. Over the next week I will
be publishing a new series of posts called “It’s not easy being green…”
In this series I’ll address greener travel options, packing lists and
things we can do at home, as well as posts on great books for kids and
the various options out there to help them understand the environment
and how to improve it.
