Monte Alban, Zapotec Site in Oaxaca Mexico

A short bus ride out of Oaxaca city, atop a mountain overlooking the valleys below, is the impressive archaeological site of Monte Alban, capital of the Zapotecs for close to 1000 years. From about 100BC to 500AD, the rulers of Monte Alban exerted a dominating influence over the Valley of Oaxaca and across much of the Oaxacan highlands. There is also evidence that they had contact with the leaders at Teotihuacan, only serving to increase their power. By 1000AD, Monte Alban had lost its dominance, and it was eventually largely abandoned.

The site at Monte Alban consists of a main plaza, surrounded by what must have been palatial residences and ceremonial centres. To the North and South of the Plaza are two large staircases leading to platforms. Many stone engravings have been found at Monte Alban, some depict the sacrificing of what are thought to be captured rulers of rival cities. Others are known as ‘conquest slabs’, and are thought to show cities that the leaders of Monte Alban had conquered. Monte Alban is also home to some well preserved ball courts, showing the importance of the game in the region.

From Oaxaca City, Monte Alban can be reached by shuttle bus, taking about half an hour. We meet some guys that had ridden to the site, but be prepared for a steep climb if you decide to take on that challenge. Since the site is at an altitude of close to 2ooo metres, expect to get a bit puffed when climbing the stairs to the platforms, and be sure to bring water. Panoramic views from Monte Alban over Oaxaca City and neighbouring communities are incredible.
