We spent a morning wandering around the vibrant markets of Oaxaca. A quick breakfast including an oversized hot chocolate and a delicious freshly squeezed orange juice began the day. We stocked up on bread and mangoes to snack on later, and bought a bottle of mezcal, since apparently Oaxaca brews the best in the world. Oaxaca is also famous for its grasshoppers, eaten cooked by the handful often with tortillas and spicy red sauce. Ladies sit nursing large baskets brimming with the delicacy. The artesania market provides market-goers with traditional Oaxacan style clothing and delicately painted wooden carvings of various animals and figures. The colours of the mini-statues are almost neon bright, and are a very tempting purchase to decorate any house back home. I love searching through these type of markets, where tourists can meet and converse with locals selling their wares. The sellers are always up for a chat, willing to answer questions, and are delighted to make a sale to a group of enthused backpackers.
