Aaah! Cayman Islands... this tropical paradise so full of marine life, stunning beaches, scenic views... and Hell?!!

Yes... HELL

Hell

This is a group of short, black, limestone formations in the town of West Bay. Although people are not allowed in amongst the limestone formations, there are two viewing platforms for tourists to see this unique area of roughly the size of half a soccer field.

So, where did the name come from?! I guess that by now you might have an idea as to why it was named Hell. In fact, there are many versions. Some say it came from the actual rock formation that locals say "This is what hell must look like." Another version says that it came from the sound created when you throw a pebble into the formation, the echoes it creates amongst the limestone peaks and valleys sound as if the pebble is "falling all the way down to Hell."

Hell

Regardless of how the name was established, the name stuck and the area has become a tourist attraction. It now features a hot red hell-themed post office from which you can send "postcards from hell", a gift shop with 'Satan' passing out souvenirs while greeting people with phrases like 'How the hell are you?' and 'Where the hell are you from?', and other hell-themed establishments.

Oh, and who could forget the bible verses!! Curiously, some of the stores in the area feature prominent quotations from the Bible on their walls. This is due to the pious nature of Caymanian society. Isn't it ironic?!! Well...

So, go to Hell!
