With the reduction in the cost of fuel, traveling to Florida for a winter vacation is one of the most inexpensive ways to get out of the snow and cold weather. Even when Florida has a cold front go through, only about half of the state might get into the freezing range in the dead of night. But the days warm up quickly and it will still feel like a tropical heat wave to those who are used to the cold.

There are so many things to do in Florida, too numerous to mention. A lot of people think that the only reason to go to Florida is for the beaches. They are nice, but all the way down the middle of the state there are unending things to do and see. There are so many lakes all the way down the state until you get to the everglades, and every one of them that retains water year around will be teeming with fish, especially largemouth bass, which is the most popular of the game fish.

In the central northern area you have all of the horse ranches, then all of the citrus groves with fruit stands lining the highways. Orlando is busting with activities beginning with Disney World, Universal Studios, Wet'n Wild, just to name a few. There is a mecca of shopping delights and then there is the night life - wow!

Further south, but still in Central Florida you have a different sort of attraction at Bok Tower in Lake Wales. The carillion bells are awesome, not to mention the extensive gardens. You should come when the Azaleas are all in bloom - it's magnificent!

Central Florida is also home to some of the world's best largemouth bass fishing. The Kissimmee Chain of Lakes has been host to numerous national tournament fishing trails because of its endless supply of trophy-sized bass. It's also well known for the specs (or crappie). Unless you are very familiar with Florida fishing, I would suggest getting a guide to assure you of having the best time possible.

Of course, once you get below Central Florida you are in the Everglades, which is a treasure in and of itself. This vast area is to the United States what the rainforest is to South America. The wildlife in this park is second to none. It will give you an experience that you won't soon forget. Make sure you take an airboat ride while in the area.

Florida - Still one of the United States best vacation spots.

Yes, it is a terrific state, and has so much more to offer than most people are aware of. I am originally from Tennessee, but had been coming to Florida often to fish. I have lived in Central Florida since 1989 and wouldn't leave for anything now!

My dad's family hails from Florida (Tampa) and I lived in Miami for a year when my parents were stationed there in 1989. We were never at a loss for things to do, although the snakes in our yard were a little freaky. I think Florida is a fantastic state. Thanks for the rundown!
